Collingham Child and Family Centre is a specialist inpatient mental health unit for children aged 5‐12 years. As one of only 6 units of its kind in the UK, the team provides intensive assessment and treatment for children with severe mental disorders which have led to significant impairment of functioning, often with associated risk. The team includes psychiatrists, nurses, family therapists, psychologists, speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, social workers, dietitian, pharmacist, health care assistants, activity coordinators, administration staff, teachers and teaching assistants. During their time at the centre, children attend the unit school and take part in a variety of therapeutic activities. Parents attend weekly family therapy sessions and can access a number of support groups.

This is a fixed-term specialty doctor post at Collingham Child and Family Centre. The post is for 8PAs to support the existing psychiatry team with assessments, diagnosis, risk reviews, prescribing and medication management, for inpatient children and new referrals. The post holder will be working alongside and be supported by the Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, specialty doctor and resident doctor at Collingham Child and Family Centre. The role of the specialty doctor will be to support the Consultant to provide dedicated, high quality medical care and treatment for young people and their families presenting with a range of mental health issues, neurodevelopmental conditions and/or developmental trauma.

To undertake psychiatry assessments of young people and families referred to Collingham Child and Family Centre, devise formulations and care plans and provide interventions/treatments. To contribute to the clerking and assessment on admission for inpatient children, including consideration of the legal framework for admission, mental state examination, risk assessment and physical examination of the child. To provide medication treatment and therapy appropriate to level of training and experience under the supervision of the Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. To contribute to assessments under the Mental Health Act. To contribute to the discharge process of inpatient children, including use of outcome, clinical coding and ensuring safe discharge planning. To communicate medical/psychiatry issues effectively within a multidisciplinary team (MDT) and contribute to MDT meetings (e.g. ward rounds, CPA/review meetings). To liaise with community professionals (e.g. community CAMHS, school, social care, others) and with medical colleagues (e.g. GPs, A&E, Paediatricians, etc), and attend professionals' meetings, as required per the child's care. To ensure good record keeping and clinical documentation of assessments, interventions, and liaison, as per GMC guidance, and to contribute to reports/correspondence as outlined in the clinical protocol of the service. To participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and research. To participate in the provision of teaching to medical undergraduates and other professionals.

The post holder will be part of a psychiatry rota for Collingham Child and Family Centre together with the resident doctors to ensure psychiatry cover during weekdays (9am-5pm). On-call: There are no out-of-hours on-call requirements linked to this post. There may be opportunities to join a resident doctor out-of-hours rota depending on experience.

Education, Qualifications and Training: Primary Medical Degree, Full GMC Registration, GMC Licence to Practise, Section 12 MHA Approved. Experience, Skills and Abilities: Completed at least four years full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent on a part time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term trainee or have equivalent experience and competencies. Experience in child and adolescent psychiatry. Psychological therapies training/experience. Personal Skills & Qualities: Excellent communication and empathic skills, Experience of team working, Good organisational skills, Enthusiasm and interest in becoming involved with the opportunities Harrow CAMHS has to offer.
