Service description:
Ganges Ward is an acute inpatient mixed ward for adults aged 18‑65 with mental health and learning difficulties. The ward provides 24 hour service, 7 days a week. Band 5 nurses work closely with the therapy team to deliver quality standard of care to patients, ensuring carers involvement throughout clinical care, and play an important role in providing compassionate care to aid patient recovery.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities include:
- Using clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep the people using our services as safe as possible.
- Safeguarding people by recognising and responding when an adult or child might be at risk from abuse and escalating concerns when necessary.
- Acting as an effective advocate for those who use our services.
- Being open and transparent about own practice.
- Supervising the work of others.
- Reflecting on everyday practice to identify safety or quality improvements.
- Working with others to create a culture of continuous improvement.
- Maintaining compliance with mandatory training requirements.
Band 5 nurses contribute to the effectiveness of services by providing skilled, evidence‑based nursing care, working with patients and families throughout care planning, acting as patient advocates in the multi‑disciplinary team, and taking responsibility for the care they give to patients.
Supporting yourself and others includes:
- Providing supervision and annual appraisals to other staff.
- Participating constructively in own supervision and appraisal processes.
- Using continuing professional development funds to consolidate clinical skills and gain mentorship skills to support student nurses.
Person specification:
- Registered Nurse Mental Health.
- Mentorship or equivalent.
- Completed preceptorship programme.
- Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
- Keeping accurate records.
- Knowledge of medication rounds and safe administration of drugs.
- Practical experience of providing high quality care.
- Experience in Acute Mental Health and facilitating group work.
- Experience of managing other staff.
Skills and abilities include:
- Able to build constructive relationships with warmth and empathy using good communication skills.
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
- Use of initiative under minimal supervision.
- Understanding of needs of people with mental health problems.
