Lavender Walk is an inpatient unit that looks after children and young people aged 13‑18. The unit is part of the central and north west London NHS Foundation Trust and is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including consultants, junior doctors, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, family therapists and support workers. The role is a Band 5 permanent full‑time (37.5 hours per week) position working a shift pattern that includes days, nights and weekends. The unit is a Tier 4 Adolescent Unit that provides comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment for young people with mental health conditions whose needs can no longer be met safely in the community. Services are delivered in a patient‑centred, safe and effective manner with an emphasis on building resilience, better coping strategies and healthy relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • 1:1 sessions with all young people on a daily basis
  • Primary nurse for one to two young people
  • Co‑facilitating groups and activities with multidisciplinary team colleagues
  • Supporting young people with daily living skills
  • Ensuring the safe running of the unit and that policies and protocols are followed
  • Attending CPA meetings and professional meetings

About the Team

The team consists of two consultant child and adolescent psychiatrists, junior doctors, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, family therapists, support workers, a ward manager and a matron. A fantastic on‑site school provides teaching and visiting tutors for music, art therapy and drama therapy.

Qualifications

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse at degree or diploma level
  • Registered Nurse for Children (RNC) at degree or diploma level
  • Registered Nurse for Learning Disabilities (RNLD) at degree or diploma level
  • Current NMC registration

Experience and Skills

  • Knowledge of mental disorder, child development, mental health law and the nursing process
  • Good knowledge of local and national policies and procedures
  • Basic counselling skills
  • Experience working in a mental health setting after registration
  • Experience working in a CAMHS setting after registration
  • Understanding of and empathy for the needs of children and young people
  • Effective communication with children, young people, parents and other professionals
  • Ability to work with challenging behaviour and to de‑escalate distressing situations
