Band 3 Health Care Support Worker works closely with people who use our services, their families, friends and carers and plays an important role in how people experience our services.
Main duties of the job:
- Safeguarding people
- Escalating safety concerns
- Being open and transparent about own practice
- Identifying areas where improvements in safety or quality can be made
- Working closely with others to improve services
- Maintaining compliance with mandatory training requirements
- Providing skilled, evidence‑based care that adheres to agreed policies and procedures
- Working with patients, families and registered nurses to contribute to all stages of the care planning process including assessing risks and needs
- Acting as patient advocates in the multi‑disciplinary team
- Contributing to creating and maintaining high‑performing teams by communicating well with all members of the team, understanding their roles, reflecting on own practice regularly and identifying how care could be improved
Detailed responsibilities:
- Work to the standards set out in the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England (Skills for Health 2013)
- Safeguard people by recognising and responding when an adult or child might be at risk from abuse, recognising own limits and escalating concerns when necessary
- Act as an effective advocate for those who use our services
- Be open and transparent about own practice
- Identify areas for improvement in safety or quality
- Work closely with others to improve services
- Maintain accurate, legible, comprehensive records
- Maintain compliance with mandatory training requirements
- Provide skilled, evidence‑based care that adheres to agreed policies and procedures
- Work with patients, families and registered nurses to contribute to all stages of the care planning process, including assessing risks and needs
- Act as patient advocates in the multi‑disciplinary team
- Implement care plans or directives overseen by registered nurses
- Communicate well with all team members, understand their roles and how they help the team achieve its objectives, reflect on own practice regularly and identify how care could be improved
- Work in partnership with patients and their families and carers, seeking consent and involving people in decision‑making where possible
- Signpost patients and carers to supportive services (e.g., courses provided by the Recovery and Wellbeing College or services provided by the local authority or the voluntary sector)
- Reassure people through professionalism, responsiveness, knowledge and confidence
- Escalate complaints or concerns quickly in line with Trust policy
- Participate in supervision and annual appraisals to reflect, understand objectives and monitor progress
Other:
- Willingness to undertake care certificate and further training as required
- Prepared to work flexible shifts including both day and weekend shifts
Experience:
- Previous experience of working with a multidisciplinary team
- Experience of communicating with a range of different people in the general public
- Previous experience working within the community
- Previous experience in a fast‑paced environment
- Experience in community or hospital settings (Healthcare/NHS or similar)
- Experience in a caring role
- Previous experience in a mental health setting or working with adults suffering from mental health problems
Qualifications:
- Numeracy and literacy skills required to keep accurate records and administer medicines (if appropriate)
- Spoken and written English to an appropriate standard to fulfil the job requirements
- NVQ L3 or equivalent
Skills & Knowledge:
- Maintain accurate, timely, concise and legible clinical records both electronic and handwritten in line with CNWL policies
- Communicate effectively with the multi‑disciplinary team, update others and use handover effectively, both face‑to‑face and by telephone
- Contribute to the implementation of care plans by helping to assess patients, develop, implement and evaluate care plans
- Basic knowledge and understanding of the Mental Health Act 1983
