CNWL (Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust) is recruiting a Special School Nurse (Band 5 or 6) to provide specialised health‑care support for children and young people with medical needs at Harrow special schools. Salary is £35,763 – £52,521 pro‑rata per annum. The role is a 30‑hour term‑time contract (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM).

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual who can work autonomously as well as collaboratively as part of the Harrow Community Children’s Nursing Team. The role operates on a term‑time contract in the schools.

Main duties of the job:

  • You will be responsible for providing excellent, high‑quality service to children in Harrow who have additional and special educational needs.
  • Your role will involve working closely with children, their parents or caregivers, and other key partners to improve health outcomes and help children with special needs reach their full potential in all environments.

Special School Nurses work closely with families and carers and are expected to be kind, responsive, professional and informative. They contribute to quality by:

  • Keeping patients safe through sound clinical skills and effective risk assessments.
  • Ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up‑to‑date skills and adhering to evidence‑based policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring patients have a good experience by respecting, empowering and working in partnership with people throughout the care‑planning process.

They work collaboratively to provide seamless care and serve as a role model to healthcare assistants, support workers, school staff and students.

Person specification:

Education and Qualifications:

  • NMC Registered Nurse – RNChild / LD Nurse / Community Children’s Nurse.
  • Numeracy skills required for the safe administration of medicines.
  • Evidence of relevant Continuous Professional Development.
  • Independent & Supplementary Prescribing Course.

Previous Experience:

  • Previous experience as a Band 6 in children’s services or a Band 5 nurse with significant experience.
  • Recent experience with children’s nursing within acute/community or school setting.
  • Previous experience working in a Special school.
  • Community nursing experience.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Able to communicate with the multidisciplinary team, present cases, take notes, update others and use handover effectively.
  • Ability to demonstrate partnership working with agencies.
  • Maintaining accurate, timely, concise and legible clinical records in accordance with CNWL policies.
  • Capable of discussing sensitive issues in a supportive manner while being assertive when necessary.
  • Using Microsoft Word for letter and report writing.
  • High standard of clinical expertise and knowledge of general paediatrics.
  • Experience of working with acute, long‑term conditions and complex children/young people.
  • Experience of working with students.
  • Knowledge and experience of child protection.
  • Expertise in specific skills and evidence of how they are developed and applied in current practice.
  • Intravenous training (theory & practice).
  • Awareness of the health needs of children and young people.

Other:

  • Access to car or other motor vehicle for work purposes.
  • Ability to work efficiently in the community.
