Job overview: CNWL are currently looking for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to provide medical leadership in developing and managing the Westminster Psychotherapy service. This post is an established part time (6 sessions) replacement post due to the previous post holder leaving the Trust, and is based at both our Westminster CMHT HUB's at 7a Woodfield Road and 190 Vauxhall Bridge Road. The post-holder will work within and alongside the Westminster community mental health teams to inform overall treatments, and to provide specialist psychological therapies assessments and treatment as part of integrated care pathways. The post-holder will also be working with a CEN Clinical Lead to provide specialist psychotherapy interventions.

Main duties of the job:

  • Providing specialised psychological therapies assessments and treatments in secondary care services as well as providing medical leadership in developing and managing the psychotherapy service.
  • To provide specialist supervision of psychotherapy treatments and fulfil the training responsibilities of the Trust for psychiatric trainees.
  • To participate actively in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Care Quality, and service evaluation projects.

CORE CLINICAL AND LEADERSHIP:

  • Managing psychotherapy referrals, as well as psychotherapy waiting lists in the Psychotherapy Service.
  • Providing specialist psychological therapy assessments and extended consultations.
  • The post-holder will provide on a weekly basis one new psychotherapy assessment directly, two follow-up assessment consultations and one consultation for ongoing complex psychotherapy cases.
  • Holding a clinical caseload including:
  • patients undergoing psychotherapy assessment;
  • complex psychotherapy patients;
  • patients in ongoing psychotherapy treatments including as provided by junior medical staff and any non-medical psychotherapists under the supervision of the post-holder (on average forty patients approximately).
  • Providing clinical and psychotherapy supervision for:
    • 2 WTE Psychotherapy junior doctor posts (six-months psychotherapy placements usually at CT3 level);
    • 1 WTE Psychotherapy Higher trainee (ST4-6) post allocated to this Consultant post.
  • The post holder will also be providing regular supervision of psychotherapy cases of junior doctors (from other teams) during their rotation placement in Westminster services.
  • The post-holder will maintain consultant responsibility for psychotherapy cases throughout the psychotherapy treatments.
  • Attending weekly and fully participating in the Westminster North and South Hub multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Direct involvement in the community teams' clinical work alongside other hub consultant colleagues.
  • Providing clinical leadership to allow for the provision of a full range of psychological treatments across Westminster.
  • Medical input and clinical leadership in line with the Trust's strategic objectives.
  • TEACHING:

    • Supervision of psychotherapy cases of junior doctors during their rotation placement in Westminster services.
    • The post-holder will also be responsible for completing the relevant ARCP assessments.
    • This includes Structured Assessment of Psychotherapy Experience (SAPEs) for his/her CT, ST doctor-supervisees and Psychotherapy Assessments of Clinical Experience (PACEs) where needed once every six months.
    • Balint Group sessions are held on a weekly basis for junior doctors based in KCW.
    • The post-holder will complete the relevant work-place based assessment for ARCP purposes.
    • Regular teaching in adult psychotherapy for the Combined Charing Cross and St Mary’s MRCPsych course.
    • Active role in the Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea postgraduate teaching programme provided at St Charles Hospital.
    • Teaching of any medical students and Foundation Year doctors in the N and S hubs as relevant.
    • Consultant psychiatrists are also required to provide Educational supervision responsibilities for Scheme trainee doctors (CTs and/or STs) and the post holder is expected to provide this for 2 trainees.

    Person specification:

    • Excellent knowledge in specialty.
    • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
    • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
    • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others.
    • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
    • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
    • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
    • Additional clinical qualifications.

    ELIGIBILITY:

    • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
    • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
    • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment.
    • Approved under S12.
    • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.

    TRANSPORT:

    • Ability to use public transport (for travel to see patients if indicated).
