Job Purpose
The Machinist/Toolmaker Apprentice supports the Maintenance Department and other relevant departments by learning and applying precision machining and toolmaking techniques to manufacture, repair and modify components used throughout the site's production facilities.
Working alongside experienced engineers and machinists, the apprentice will develop practical skills in manual machining, engineering measurement, interpreting technical drawings, and the safe use of workshop equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the manufacture, repair and modification of precision components, tooling, fixtures and machine parts to support production and maintenance activities.
- Learn to safely operate manual machine tools, including centre lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, drills and other workshop equipment.
- Support the Maintenance team by producing replacement components for planned maintenance, breakdown repairs and continuous improvement projects.
- Develop the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and manufacturing documentation.
- Learn precision measuring techniques using equipment such as micrometers, vernier callipers, dial test indicators and height gauges to ensure components meet specification.
- Assist with the assembly, fitting and inspection of machined components prior to installation.
- Learn to select appropriate materials, cutting tools and machining methods for a variety of engineering applications.
- Support the repair and refurbishment of worn or obsolete machine components through reverse engineering and precision machining techniques.
- Maintain accurate workshop records and complete manufacturing and job documentation as required.
- Ensure all workshop equipment, tools and measuring instruments are used safely, correctly and maintained in good condition.
- Keep the workshop clean, organised and compliant with company housekeeping and 5S standards.
- Follow all company Health, Safety and Environmental policies and procedures, ensuring safe working practices are maintained at all times.
- Participate fully in apprenticeship training, attending college or external training providers and successfully completing all required coursework and practical assessments.
- Work collaboratively with machinists, mechanical maintenance technicians, electricians and production personnel to support the efficient operation of the manufacturing facility.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude, willingness to learn and commitment to developing the skills required to become a qualified Machinist/Toolmaker.
Experience Required
- Interest in machining, fabrication and manufacturing components.
- Basic understanding of mechanical principles is desirable.
- Good problem-solving and practical skills.
- Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
