Function / Area: Underwriting - Marine Cargo

Reporting to: Marine Cargo Underwriting Manager

Position Summary

We are looking for an Assistant Underwriter to support the execution of the Marine Cargo business plan by supporting the underwriting teams, focusing on developing underwriting skills and technical knowledge whilst helping to manage existing accounts and identifying new business opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to business plan achievement by handling renewals and writing new business within underwriting authority.
  • Establish and build upon relationships with brokers, clients, reinsurers and Lloyds as necessary.
  • Promote the development of the business by identifying new business and cross sell opportunities.
  • Support the preparation of the business plan and any other document/information as required.
  • Ensure accurate entry of policy aggregate information onto the relevant software and spreadsheets, as required.
  • Ensure the syndicate records and files are maintained and up to date.
  • Validate USMs and SCMs on a daily basis.
  • Prepare and report figures and statistics for the business unit or team account.
  • Support the monitoring and control of the business, as directed by Underwriters.
  • Liaise with and assist the claims department when required in the settlement of claims.
  • Comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and ensure, at a level appropriate to the position, that appropriate measures are in place to ensure this compliance.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated understanding of business objectives and the market in which we operate.
  • Intellectual curiosity.
  • Ability to plan and organise own role effectively.
  • Understanding of accounting principles.
  • Mathematical and statistical ability.
  • Strong understanding of risk management and governance framework and how own role fits into it.
  • Underwriting discipline with 12+ months in an Underwriting Assistant capacity.
  • A practical understanding and analysis of risk, pricing, contract wordings, and claims.
  • Ability to promote own profile and CNA Hardy to brokers and clients.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Effective communication and rapport building skills.
  • Effective influencing skills.
  • Ability to be assertive when appropriate.
  • Ability to use appropriate systems to the technical level required.
  • ACII qualified.
  • Completion of ALMI test or equivalent.
  • Appropriate knowledge of all relevant regulatory and legal requirements applicable to the position.
