Position Summary
We are looking for an Underwriting manager who will manage the P&C underwriting team and is accountable for the business results through profitability, business development, analysis and monitoring of a book of business. Responsible for delivering a new business financial target. Under general management direction, works within broad limits of authority requiring a high degree of technical complexity and coordination. May have regional, industry segment or company-wide scope of responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines: Role is a hybrid role across people management and Individual New Business contributor.
- Manage the work activities, performance and development of team.
- Coach, lead and develop underwriters and participate in the development of underwriting training.
- Make recommendations on underwriting policy and pricing strategy to management.
- Review and manage the application of underwriting policy and pricing for all risks within an assigned book of business.
- Prepare and present operational reports to management.
- Drive regional and branch initiatives and business strategies.
- Lead the process of marketing products and services through various brokers.
- Develop, maintain and cultivate broker relationships to ensure positive and profitable outcomes for the segment and line of business.
- Lead, document, monitor and measure the underwriting team with their broker relationship management.
- Keep current on territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends. May participate in industry trade groups.
- Comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and ensure that, at a level appropriate to the position, appropriate measures are in place to ensure this compliance.
- May perform additional duties as agreed.

- High level of ability to effectively lead, coach and develop underwriting staff.
- Advanced technical expertise, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures.
- Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
- Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage and prioritise multiple projects.
- Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.
- Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
- Ability to achieve business goals and objectives.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
- Appropriate knowledge of all relevant regulatory and legal requirements applicable to the position.
