At CMS2, we specialise in the design and manufacture of atmospheric control systems for the defence industry. We are experts in enabling high availability atmosphere management systems to generate breathable air for submariners, allowing boats to remain underwater for long periods of time. We do this by combining over sixty years of expertise with the latest technology and processes to design, build and support high quality systems and solutions.
CMS2 is part of a wider group (Science Group). Science Group is a science & technology business providing consultancy and systems to an international client base.
Key Responsibilities
This Quality Engineer position sits within our bespoke engineering solutions side of the business, where we develop life-support systems in critical workspace, oxygen and carbon capture-based solutions, water purification, rugged electronics for harsh environments and precision engineering of high-integrity equipment.
We are looking for this Quality Engineer to work alongside the project team to advise and implement customer quality requirements. This will involve working with the manufacturing team as well as the supply chain to ensure customer quality flow downs are implemented, monitored, and controlled. As part of your role, you will ensure product and process conformance and drive non-conformance investigations and associated root cause analysis activities.
Other key responsibilities will include:
- Development and maintenance of the Quality Management System,
- Managing Manufacturing Inspection & Test Plans and Life-Time Quality Records.
- Develop Quality Plans for new projects.
- Concession management,
- Managing communications with customers and suppliers regarding Quality issues
- Conduct supplier quality control audits on a regular basis to ensure supplies remain in compliance with company, manufacturing and production standards.
- Plan and carry out internal audits against ISO 9001 and internal processes
- Report audit findings, agree corrective actions, and verify closure of actions to maintain compliance
- Represent the quality function during design reviews, product changes, and new product introductions
- Communicate with suppliers regularly to address any concerns and foster an environment that facilitates continual improvement in working relationships.
- Serving as a liaison between our company\βs Quality and supply chain teams and the suppliers to identify quality issues and produce solutions.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
To deliver this role you will be required to have the following:
- Minimum 5 yearsβ experience as a Quality Engineer in a manufacturing environment or in a similar role.
- Comprehensive experience and knowledge of ISO 9001 and awareness of ISO 14001 and 45001.
- Strong supplier and customer management skills.
- Knowledge of quality management tools and methodologies (i.e. APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, 8D, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Control Plans, six Sigma, Kaizen, Configuration Management, Risk Management, etc.
- Knowledge of problem analysis methodologies (i.e. 8D, Ishikawa, 5- why, DoE, DMAIC, etc.) and decision-making skills
- Providing technical advice and guidance to suppliers to reduce defect rates.
- Proficiency in interpreting mechanical drawings, GD&T, and measuring tools
- Demonstratable knowledge of document control and organisational skills.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office.
- Strong verbal communication, technical writing, and process improvement skills
- Experience of working within a military / defence environment.

Desirable skills/knowledge
- Knowledge of the special processes used in the manufacture of aerospace and systems detailed parts (e.g. NDT, chemical processing, welding, heat treatment, coating applications, etc.) and Mill cert information.
- Knowledge of aerospace quality management systems (AS9100 Revision D)
- Defence regulatory requirements and standards β DEFSTAN, DEFCON
- Lead Audit trained UKAS Certified (Internal/External)
