We’re looking for a Senior Associate to join our Commercial Tech & Media team in London on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract. The team advises on a broad range of complex contractual, ICT regulatory and public policy matters across sectors. Our work is characterised by its strategic importance, cross border dimension and close alignment with clients’ core technology and digital transformation agendas.

Our clients span a broad range of sectors – including technology, communications, space, financial services, energy, retail, and the public sector – and range from major multinational organisations and leading technology providers to high growth scale ups and innovative businesses developing cutting edge products and services.

On the IT and Telecoms side, our work includes:

  • Significant, often business critical projects and high value transactions such as digital transformation, outsourcing, system development and software contracts (acting for both customers and suppliers);
  • Advising technology companies (from global CSPs to innovative scale ups) on the design, structuring and commercialisation of new products and solutions, frequently coordinating multi jurisdictional projects across EMEA and beyond;
  • Advising on the evolving digital regulatory landscape, including AI, cyber security, consumer regulation, cloud and satellite communications;
  • Supporting clients in emerging and high growth areas such as fintech, medtech, digital infrastructure, blockchain, robotics, automation and artificial intelligence.

You will have the opportunity to work on high profile, market shaping projects and transactions, often at the forefront of technological and regulatory change. The team also advises a wide range of clients that process significant volumes of personal data on compliance with privacy and data protection laws, including the GDPR, and is regularly engaged on large scale compliance and implementation programmes.

We are a close knit and collaborative team across our offices in London, Bristol, Sheffield, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, working seamlessly with colleagues across the UK and CMS’s international network. Accordingly, the role offers meaningful exposure to cross border mandates and international clients.

We encourage our team to take an active role in training, thought leadership and business development, both within the UK and across our international platform. We also invest heavily in legal technology and AI enabled tools, providing lawyers with the opportunity to work at the leading edge of legal service delivery.

In this role, you can expect to get involved in a variety of work including:

  • Draft and negotiate a broad range of complex commercial agreements, including outsourcing, services, collaboration, licensing, supply and distribution arrangements;
  • Advise on a broad mix of commercial, IT, communications, digital regulation and data matters;
  • Take a leading role on matters (commensurate with experience), including day to day client management and delivery;
  • Work closely with partners and other senior lawyers on larger and more complex transactions;
  • Build and develop strong, lasting relationships with clients;
  • Contribute to business development initiatives, client relationship programmes and market facing activities.

About you: We will invest in your ongoing training and development to support your professional goals and help you to thrive in your role from day one. Our opportunities are open to all suitably qualified applicants, so to be considered for this role, you must meet the following skills and experience:

  • Strong grounding in commercial contracts, with experience or a demonstrable interest in IT, technology, communications, digital regulation or data;
  • Experience gained in a City, leading regional or international firm, or in house within a relevant sector;
  • Typically 5–7+ PQE, although we will consider candidates with slightly more or less experience where they demonstrate the required capabilities and commercial judgement;
  • Experience and confidence in dealing directly with clients and managing relationships;
  • Excellent drafting skills and the ability to translate legal concepts into clear, pragmatic and commercially focused advice;
  • Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills, with experience of managing matters and contributing to more complex transactions;
  • Sound judgement, strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach.

What’s in it for you? We want to reward you today and help you plan for tomorrow. We appreciate that everyone is different, therefore we have designed a benefits system that offers choice and flexibility based on individual needs and lifestyles.

  • Competitive basic salary (reviewed annually)
  • Flexible, hybrid working policy
  • Generous bonus scheme
  • Up to 25 days holiday (rising to 28 days with service)
  • Holiday exchange scheme
  • Private medical insurance
  • Enhanced parental leave
  • Reasonable adjustments and accommodation for disabled talent in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.
