We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to help design and build a unified lakehouse platform on Databricks, empowering CMR Surgical to become a truly data-driven organisation. Our mission is to democratise access to data across the company, enabling every team - from R&D to Commercial to make confident, data-informed decisions. This role is perfect for a product-minded engineer who applies robust software engineering practices to build trusted, discoverable, and scalable data products. Your work will help unlock innovation, fuel confident choices, and ultimately help us treat more patients with the Versius Surgical System.
But it’s not just about the work—it’s about the people. We are deeply committed to the growth and development of our team members, and work hard to foster an environment of continuous learning and growth. This is a hybrid role, with a minimum of 1 day per week in our Cambridge office, plus additional time on-site when needed.
About CMR Surgical: CMR is an exciting and evolving company to be joining right now. Our commitment to our goal of building a world-class medical devices company is underpinned by the ground-breaking innovation of our next generation of surgical robots and a diverse team of talented and supportive individuals. We’re breaking new ground which makes working here exciting, it provides autonomy, opportunity and makes the things you do visible. Come and join us and see what you’re capable of.
Responsibilities:
- Play a key role in shaping the foundations of our Databricks-based lakehouse platform: how do we organise our unity catalogue; how we define and maintain core dimensions and facts; and how we design a platform that is both discoverable and useful to teams across CMR.
- Write clean, performant Python and SQL, and work fluently with Spark/PySpark.
- Integrate third-party tools and connectors (e.g. from CRM systems and data discovery platforms) into a cohesive ecosystem.
- Take ownership of software components from inception to production, ensuring reliability and maintainability.
- Champion and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the team and wider organisation.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across the business to translate real-world challenges into elegant data solutions.
- Write clear and concise technical documentation.
- Be willing to turn your hand to anything within the Data remit that supports the team with delivering its objectives.
About you:
- Has hands-on experience building Databricks lakehouses, and is excited by the challenge of shaping foundational data infrastructure.
- Understands how to engineer data platform for trust, scalability, and discoverability, not just pipelines.
- Is confident working with Databricks, cloud (AWS), and the broader modern data stack.
- Enjoys working in a focused, fast-paced team, delivering iterative improvements and user-friendly outcomes.
- Thrives in a collaborative environment, contributing ideas and learning from peers to raise the bar across the team.
- Is adaptable, curious, and motivated by continuous learning.
- Has experience in data engineering, especially in greenfield or scaling environments, or equivalent.
- Applies data-as-a-product thinking: designs and delivers data assets that solve real problems for defined users. Ensures each dataset has a clear purpose, trusted documentation, quality checks, version control, and is built to deliver measurable business value.
- Thinks like an engineer: Git, CI, automated tests, modular code, alerting, and clean architecture are default.
- Is excited to lay foundational patterns that others will follow.
At CMR we’re building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace; what matters most to us is that you identify with our values and are passionate about making a difference.
