About the Role
The Onsite Service Engineer will be based between our UK Cambridge and Ely locations. The role is responsible for the service and maintenance of our commercial surgical robotic systems for a range of internal customers. It plays a key role in ensuring maximum availability of systems for surgical demonstrations, training, clinical studies and upgrades. Being based between our headquarters and manufacturing sites, the role will closely work with key internal teams enabling your development and performance. The position requires time to be spent between the two locations relative to the current workload. On occasion and in response to business need, support of the field team in local surgical locations could be expected. The role will require prioritising and completing outstanding service work within defined deadlines.
Responsibilities
- Support the service and maintenance of the Versius Robots in Cambridge headquarters and Ely manufacturing sites.
- Own prioritising and completing outstanding service work within defined deadlines.
- Ensure preventative maintenance is carried out within defined timeframes.
- Complete service work precisely and document in full compliance with FDA Good Documentation Practices (GDocP).
- Maintain accurate and timely service records, and accurate system configurations for the installed base.
- Manage spare parts inventory in line with company guidelines, including ordering, reverse logistics and calibration tools within your area of responsibility.
- Complete all administrative tasks on time (service orders, logistics paperwork, email).
- On occasion provide on-site service for hospital locations locally in support of the field team.
- Undertake extensive product training and maintain skills as systems and processes evolve.
- Report any complaints in alignment with internal SLAs and Post‑Market Surveillance processes; elevate feedback for continuous product improvement through defined channels.
- Complete active role in quality processes such as NCR, CAPA, Concession as appropriate.
- Be willing to turn your hand to anything within the Service and Support remit that helps the team deliver its objectives.
About you
To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have/be:
- Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or equivalent in engineering, electronics, biomedical engineering, or related discipline.
- Previous experience of onsite/field service experience in a regulated environment (medical or pharmaceutical preferred).
- Experience servicing high‑value capital equipment (e.g., imaging systems, surgical robotics, radiotherapy).
- Proven track record in independent troubleshooting and repair of complex electromechanical systems.
- Knowledge of electronics, electrical systems, and software, including performing software updates via engineering interfaces.
- An understanding of ESD measures, Electrical Safety, Medical Contamination risks, decontamination.
- Proficient in the use of tools such as DMMs and ES testers.
- Familiarity with operating theatre/OR protocols and medical device handling an advantage.
- A proactive, hands‑on attitude with strong problem‑solving skills.
- The ability to work with autonomy to deliver to deadlines.
- Strong organizational skills, capable of managing multiple priorities and meeting competing department deadlines.
- Ability to communicate clearly with both customers and internal teams under pressure, maintaining strong relationships.
- Flexibility to work in cross‑functional environments and adapt to changing priorities.
- Consistent and resilient in providing structured feedback internally, actively contributing to product and process improvements.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiar with Field Service CRM tools such as ServiceMax.
- Ability to lift up to 20 kg and work in clinical environments, including operating theatres.
- Valid UK driver’s license and ability to travel between sites at short notice.
- Able to be onsite daily in Ely or Cambridge locations for standard office hours.
