A legal professional who finds the commercial side of business more stimulating. Although responsible for the licensing and policies for some of CME's products, the successful candidate will also be adept to think critically for some of our larger forward-looking agreement structure and IP protective projects (like how to handle licensing of AI, data on-chain, etc).

This is a strategic position sitting at the confluence of Licensing, Policy and Legal. As consumer trends, technology and data products evolve at a rapid pace, you will use your legal training to help future-proof the commercial structures that govern some of CME's most valuable proprietary data and analytics products. You will work within the Data and Analytics Licensing and Policy team to develop commercial constructs that protect our Intellectual Property (IP) while maximizing global market reach. You will be responsible for ensuring that our policies are not just legally sound, but commercially intuitive and easy for our clients to adopt. This is a great opportunity for a professional with a legal background who is looking for a role with more commercial influence. You enjoy the precision of legal writing but have a "business-first" mindset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commercial Policy Construction: Devise and draft innovative commercial policies and licensing constructs for CME's proprietary data and analytics across Futures, Options, and Cash markets.
  • Critical Legal Thinking: Apply legal rigor to analyze the evolving regulatory landscape (SEC, CFTC, MiFID II) and determine how it impacts our data licensing models.
  • IP Protection & Advocacy: Act as a guardian of CME's intellectual property, working closely with internal and external Counsel to ensure our commercial programs are robust against risk while remaining competitive.
  • Market Intelligence: Conduct deep-dive reviews of new data consumption trends and competitor licensing frameworks to ensure CME remains at the forefront of industry standards and "best-in-class" policy design.

Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in Law (JD or equivalent) with 1-2+ years of experience in contractual frameworks or Intellectual Property law.
  • Proficient data analysis skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a talent for simplifying complex concepts.
  • Keen interest in IP protection of data/digital assets.
  • Demonstrable experience advising on License agreements.
  • A basic understanding of the value of financial market data.
  • The ability to translate legal risk into commercial, operational advice.
  • A hands-on, pragmatic mindset suited to a growing business.
  • Proven ability to influence internal stakeholders and solve complex problems.
