You will play a crucial, hands‑on role in our global DRE team ensuring our critical database systems are reliable, fast, and scalable. Moving away from traditional, reactive database administration, our mission is to proactively maintain and enhance the reliability, integrity, and performance of our data footprint.
Accountabilities
- System Health & Proactive Incident Management: Monitor database system health and participate in a follow‑the‑sun incident response rotation. Respond to and resolve database‑related incidents, diagnose issues, and conduct root‑cause analysis to prevent recurring problems.
- Observability, Performance & Optimization: Monitor and tune top resource‑consuming patterns and critical queries proactively so databases never become a bottleneck. Track performance metrics to ensure database speed and uptime meet the practical needs of our applications. Work closely with development teams to better understand application workloads and optimize database code within an application context.
- DevOps, Provisioning & Automation: Provision databases and schemas according to application requirements. Actively apply Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles and CI/CD pipelines to manage database structures across environments. Support database deployments as required, utilizing a functional understanding of schema migration tools like Flyway. Develop automation scripts and tools to streamline data operations and make them scalable.
- Resilience, Data Protection & Security: Support the implementation of database resilience, backup, and Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies. Assist in redesigning architectures for 24x7 availability, including exposure to zero‑downtime deployments (e.g., Blue‑Green). Setup and maintain replication and Change Data Capture (CDC) processes. Ensure data security, access controls, and encryption comply with standard regulations.
- Documentation: Maintain clear and up‑to‑date documentation related to data systems, configurations, and standard operating procedures.
Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Professional Experience: 2–3 years of hands‑on experience in Database Administration, Data Reliability Engineering, or a similar role with exposure to database infrastructure.
- Core Database Technologies: Foundational knowledge of relational and NoSQL database concepts. Exposure to or experience with a subset of our cloud‑based data platforms (GCP Cloud SQL, PostgreSQL, AlloyDB, Spanner, Cassandra, Firestore, Bigtable, or BigQuery) is desired.
- Scripting & Automation: Familiarity with scripting languages (such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell) and the ability to read, modify, or write basic scripts to help automate operational tasks.
- Infrastructure Tools: Experience with containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes is a plus.
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) & DevOps: Experience or familiarity with using Terraform or Kubernetes Config Connector (KCC) to provision infrastructure, alongside version control (Git) and deployment tools (like Argo or general CI/CD pipelines).
- Methodologies: Understanding of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices.
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to Change Data Capture (CDC) tools like Striim.
Certifications: Google Associate Cloud Engineer or actively studying for GCP Professional Database Engineer.
