I have been instructed to recruit on behalf of our client who are a well-established specialist electronics repair, design and system support company based in Wiltshire. Operating for over three decades, the business supports a diverse client base across the Aerospace, Defence, Rail, Road and Power sectors, delivering long-term repair and maintenance solutions for complex electronic systems.
The Role
We are seeking a capable and practical Electronics Test Technician to join a highly skilled technical team. This is a hands-on, bench-based role focused on component-level fault finding and repair of electronic assemblies and systems. Much of the equipment supported is legacy or bespoke, and technical documentation may occasionally be limited. The successful candidate will therefore need to be confident analysing circuits independently in order to diagnose faults and determine effective repair solutions. This role requires strong technical competence, sound judgement, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a small, close-knit team.
Key Responsibilities
- Fault Finding - Diagnose electronic and electromechanical assemblies down to component level, often without complete circuit diagrams or documentation.
- Component-Level Repair - Carry out detailed repairs of printed circuit boards and electronic assemblies, restoring units to full working condition.
- Soldering & Rework - Confidently use soldering and rework equipment, working with surface mount and through-hole technologies.
- Circuit Analysis - Interpret circuit diagrams where available and analyse circuitry directly where documentation is limited.
- Test Equipment Use - Operate standard electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters and signal generators, with the ability to work with unfamiliar equipment where required.
- Test Development - Assist in developing or improving practical test methods and equipment to support ongoing repair activities.
- Workload Management - Manage multiple repair tasks efficiently while maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy.
- Quality Assurance - Carry out thorough testing of repaired units to ensure reliability and performance standards are achieved.
- Documentation - Maintain clear and accurate records of diagnostics, repairs completed and components used.
Skills & Experience
A relevant electronics qualification would be advantageous but is not essential. Proven hands-on experience with component-level fault finding and repair is more important than academic background. Candidates should demonstrate:
- Strong understanding of electronic components and circuit operation.
- Practical experience diagnosing faults to component level.
- Confidence working independently and taking ownership of technical problems.
- A methodical and disciplined approach to fault finding.
- Clear and accurate technical documentation skills.
- Ability to manage workload effectively within a small technical team.
- Careful, detail-focused approach to bench-based technical work.
What We're Looking For
This role would suit an experienced electronics technician who enjoys problem solving, circuit analysis and hands-on repair work, particularly within environments where systems are bespoke, legacy or not fully documented. If you enjoy working within a skilled and supportive technical team and take pride in restoring complex electronics to full operation, we would be keen to hear from you.
