The Opportunity
We are currently working with a highly respected, technically focused organisation operating within the construction and built environment sector , who are looking to appoint a Business Development Manager as part of their continued growth.
This is a newly created position and represents an excellent opportunity for an experienced commercial professional to take ownership of new business development across the UK.
The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying and developing new commercial opportunities, building relationships with key decision-makers and working closely with internal technical teams to deliver the right solutions for customers.
This is not a traditional, high-volume sales role .
Our client is specifically looking for someone who can combine strong commercial ability with genuine technical understanding and credibility.
The Role
You will take responsibility for developing new business across the UK, targeting organisations within the construction, manufacturing and wider built environment sectors.
Your customers could include architects, property developers, manufacturers, contractors, consultants and other technical stakeholders .
You will be expected to understand customer requirements, have credible conversations around technical challenges and identify opportunities where the organisation's specialist services can add value.
Key responsibilities will include
- Developing and implementing a UK-wide business development strategy.
- Identifying and targeting new prospective clients.
- Building and managing a strong pipeline of new business opportunities.
- Developing long-term relationships with key decision-makers and stakeholders.
- Generating new opportunities through proactive prospecting, networking, referrals, industry events and existing relationships.
- Meeting with clients to understand their technical and commercial requirements.
- Working closely with internal technical teams to develop appropriate solutions.
- Preparing and presenting commercial proposals and tenders.
- Negotiating commercial terms and converting opportunities into new business.
- Developing relationships with architects, developers, manufacturers, contractors and consultants.
- Identifying new sectors, markets and potential revenue streams.
- Keeping up to date with relevant market developments, legislation and industry trends.
- Representing the business at conferences, exhibitions and industry events.
- Maintaining accurate pipeline and customer information through CRM systems.
- Providing regular updates to senior management on business development activity and opportunities.
About You
We are looking for a technically minded Business Development professional who enjoys selling complex services and building genuine relationships with customers.
You may currently be working within
- Fire safety or fire protection
- Fire testing or technical testing
- Façade / cladding
- Engineering
- Testing, inspection or certification
- Another technically focused area of the built environment
What matters most is that you have the technical curiosity and commercial ability to learn a specialist service offering and confidently discuss it with technically knowledgeable customers.
We're looking for someone who has
- Proven experience in business development, technical sales or commercial development .
- A strong track record of winning new B2B business.
- Experience selling technical products, services or solutions.
- Experience dealing with customers within construction, manufacturing, engineering or the wider built environment.
- The ability to understand a customer's requirements and translate them into a commercial opportunity.
- Strong communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
- The confidence to engage with both technical and senior commercial stakeholders.
- A consultative approach to sales rather than a purely transactional style.
- Strong commercial awareness and business acumen.
- The ability to manage your own territory, diary and pipeline.
- A professional and personable approach to client relationships.
- A willingness to travel throughout the UK.
