An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Associate (ideally 2–5 years PQE) to join our Police & Emergency Services team based in Manchester.

The Team

Led by Siobhan Mullins, the team is seeking a talented solicitor to manage their own caseload while supporting colleagues across a broad range of civil actions. These include claims involving assault, false imprisonment, serious injury, data protection breaches, Equality Act violations, and human rights claims. The team is highly regarded for its expertise in defending civil actions brought against police forces and is frequently instructed on complex, high-profile matters. This includes cases relating to terrorism incidents, deaths in police custody, and failures to secure timely medical intervention following catastrophic injuries in custody. This role offers the opportunity to work on a diverse and often high-profile caseload on behalf of multiple police forces and their insurers. In addition to civil litigation, the team is currently instructed on significant group litigation and a major public inquiry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing and assisting on both pre-litigated and litigated civil claims against police forces on behalf of insurers and public authorities.
  • Handling catastrophic injury and large loss claims involving police forces, insurers, and corporate clients.
  • Running your own fast-track and multi-track caseload while supporting senior lawyers on complex, sensitive, and high-value matters.
  • Developing case strategies, drafting pleadings and witness statements, and preparing instructions for counsel and experts.
  • Attending conferences, trials, and various forms of ADR, including conducting negotiations.
  • Keeping up to date with relevant legal and industry developments.
  • Supporting client relationship development, including participation in training and networking activities.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience managing a caseload of claims involving police/public authorities and/or large loss EL/PL matters, including liability assessment.
  • Experience within a defendant practice, ideally in police law, public authority, or large loss teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, with a high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional and confident communicator, able to build strong internal and external relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong academic background.
