The Team

The Global Business Development Leadership team sets firmwide strategy in consultation with the Global Strategy Board and Global Practice Executives. Business Development and Marketing teams are aligned to regional boards and leadership across the UK, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and the Americas. This role sits within the Commodities sector, one of the firm’s core growth engines, and works closely with the Commodities Executive Committee (ExCo), sector partners and regional BD leads. The role plays a critical part in driving structured, high value client engagement and converting opportunity into revenue across the global commodities platform.

The Role

The Senior Client & Business Development Manager – Commodities is a senior, sector embedded role focused on strategic client development, opportunity conversion and revenue growth. The role is heavily weighted towards the engagement and conversion stages of the pipeline, supporting priority commodities clients, sponsors, traders, miners, funds and state linked entities. It requires close partnership with senior lawyers to shape account strategies, originate opportunities, and drive disciplined follow up. You will act as a trusted commercial adviser to partners, bringing market insight, pipeline intelligence and structured BD execution to ensure the Commodities strategy translates into measurable outcomes. This role may have line management responsibilities and is supported by specialist teams across pitching, marketing, communications, client development and shared services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client & Opportunity Development
    • Lead client development activity for priority commodities clients, including traders, producers, investors, logistics operators and state owned enterprises.
    • Own and drive client account plans, ensuring activity is focused on commercially realistic and strategically aligned opportunities.
    • Facilitate senior level client meetings, sector roadshows and hub based engagement programmes in line with Commodities ExCo priorities.
    • Identify cross practice and cross region opportunities, working with partners to broaden and deepen client relationships.
  • Pipeline Management & Conversion
    • Drive disciplined pipeline management, ensuring opportunities are properly qualified, tracked and progressed.
    • Lead and coordinate strategic pitches, panels and proposals for major commodities clients.
    • Challenge unfocused activity and support partners to prioritise high value, winnable opportunities.
    • Track outcomes and ROI, ensuring learning is embedded into future client activity.
  • Sector Strategy & Leadership Support
    • Work closely with the Commodities ExCo to implement agreed sector strategy and client priorities.
    • Translate sector objectives into actionable BD plans, campaigns and client programmes.
    • Provide insight on market trends, competitor positioning and client behaviour across global commodities markets.
    • Support delivery of a consistent commodities value proposition across regions and practices.
  • Marketing & Profile
    • Shape and deliver targeted, client led marketing and communications initiatives, aligned to live opportunities.
    • Ensure content, credentials and materials are practical, current and client relevant.
    • Position senior partners as credible advisers through coordinated thought leadership and client engagement.
  • Internal Leadership & Collaboration
    • Act as a senior voice within the BD community, role modelling best practice.
    • Collaborate closely with other sector and regional BD leads to ensure joined up delivery.
    • Contribute to continuous improvement of firmwide BD tools, processes and sector models.

Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience in senior business development or client development roles within professional services (legal, infrastructure, commodities, finance or adjacent sectors).
  • Strong understanding of commodities markets, including trading, resources, logistics, energy transition and geopolitical drivers.
  • Proven experience of leading complex pitches, client programmes and multi partner initiatives.
  • High commercial acumen with the confidence to challenge, prioritise and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication and organisational skills.
