  • Team Overview

The Secure Estate team primarily serves private prison and custodial organisations, helping them manage legal, regulatory, and reputational issues arising from deaths in custody, judicial review/prisoner claims, human rights challenges, and other litigation related to prison operations.

Role Overview

As a Paralegal within the Secure Estate Team, you will support partners, legal directors, senior associates, and associates in the management of cases involving HMPrison & Probation Service and other custodial bodies.

This position offers exposure to complex and sensitive matters and a platform for career development.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the management of prison‑related litigation matters.
  • Review and analyse legal documents, medical records and evidence.
  • Draft correspondence, court documents and witness statements.
  • Prepare instructions to counsel and experts.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare case summaries.
  • Liaise with clients, witnesses, experts and other stakeholders.
  • Manage court deadlines and maintain accurate case records.
  • Support the team with disclosure exercises and document review projects.
  • Assist with trial preparation and hearing bundles.

Qualifications

  • Excellent organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical abilities.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise effectively.
  • Proactive and collaborative approach to work.
  • Confidence in building relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and the ability to quickly learn and use case‑management and document‑management systems.
