Business Unit Director – Medical Education
EXCITING Senior opportunity for a commercially driven, strategically minded Business Unit Director to lead a high-performing medical communications business unit within a leading Medical Communications agency based in the centre of London. You’ll own revenue growth, guide client strategy, elevate delivery standards and inspire teams—while shaping the wider direction of the organisation.
What You’ll Do
Lead the Business
- Own and deliver revenue targets, driving both organic growth and new business.
- Oversee financial performance, forecasting and profitability with strong commercial judgement.
- Set strategic direction across accounts and ensure exceptional execution of medical education programmes.
Be the Senior Client Partner
- Act as lead counsel for key clients, ensuring programmes align with strategic objectives.
- Build influential relationships with senior stakeholders, procurement, societies and experts.
- Anticipate issues, manage escalations and turn insights into opportunities for growth.
Drive Operational Excellence
- Ensure all processes and compliance requirements are consistently met—and continuously improved.
- Maintain accurate financial management, utilisation oversight and capacity planning.
- Share best practice across teams and help raise delivery standards across the business.
- Line manage and coach senior team members; ensure meaningful onboarding, progression and appraisals.
- Foster a motivated, collaborative and high-performance culture.
- Work with leadership to recruit, allocate resources and manage freelancers effectively.
Champion Medical Communications Expertise
- Bring deep understanding of medical education, pharma industry trends and Codes of Conduct (IFPMA, EFPIA, ABPI, PMCPA, etc.).
- Ensure all work meets relevant compliance, legal and SOP requirements.
- Keep the team up to date with industry developments and innovations.
Drive Growth & Shape the Future
- Expand business across existing and new clients; lead and support pitches.
- Influence wider organisational strategy by identifying opportunities and proposing new initiatives.
What You Bring
- 10+ years’ experience in medical communications with proven commercial, strategic and client leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multi-million-pound programmes and multi-team delivery.
- Strong communicator who inspires confidence, drives results and builds high-performing teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
