Job Description

Engineering Manager – Ruby on Rails – hybrid in London – £110k 🎉

This full time long term role has just come on the market and is a fantastic opportunity for a friendly, experienced Engineering Manager or Tech Lead who has line management experience ✨

You will be supporting the team as they embark on building a new booking engine for their platform and completing the transition away from .NET to Ruby on Rails version 8, which is well underway.

Essentials:

  • Hands-on Ruby on Rails experience in your career is essential as you will be mentoring and helping the backend Engineers to continue improving their skills. You'll be hands-off in the role but still close to the code and involved in technical conversations, code reviews, stand-ups, etc.
  • 6 direct reports. 4 in London consisting of 2 back end using Ruby & 2 front end using Next.js. 2 backend devs in South Africa who are maintaining the previous system built in .NET whilst the transition to Ruby on Rails is finalised.
  • Hybrid in London, Shoreditch. Ideally 3 days a week in the office but they might be open to 2 for the right person. The rest of the developers come in at least 2 days, but can also request to work from home for specific projects that require total uninterrupted focus.
  • Salary: to £110k & great benefits like 33 days off, health insurance, company socials, B-corp organisation, and more 💷
  • The company are like the cupid but for luxury holidays – matching clients (usually entrepreneurs, actors, artists, influencers) with unforgettable accommodation & seamless experiences 🛫
  • Company tech: Ruby on Rails, Postgres, Next.js, AWS, Agile, CI/CD, multiple daily deployments ⚙️

The company started in 2002 and they were pretty small for a number of years, but having received ongoing investment from a well-known firm, the tech team has received lots of investment and growth in the last couple of years, resulting in overall company improvements and success. Since investment, the company have been in a different phase but are keen to maintain their friendly vibe and sociable culture.

Interview process: interview with me (30 mins), interview with their HR manager (40 mins), Technical Interview with their fractional CTO, short engineering task, final stage in their office where you'll meet the team. They are hoping to have the new hire secured in the next month or so, and start ASAP but they're also able to wait for the right person.

Extra context and good to knows: I placed a Ruby Engineer with this company in 2024 who is doing really well, progressing quickly and enjoying it. They have an incredibly diverse team and they value the rich opinions that this brings. You need to have the right personality for this role as they value this equally to tech skills.

They're looking for someone who has strong visibility and impact in the business, so you'll need bring ideas to the table, and be able to communicate with internal and external stakeholders, tech and non-tech.
