Role Overview
The Lead Power Systems Engineer will be a critical member of the Cloud HQ Development team, primarily responsible for design, performance and delivery of Cloud HQ’s utility infrastructure across EMEA.
This role plays a critical part in ensuring that all infrastructure meets the highest standards of reliability, efficiency, and scalability.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in power systems engineering, data centre design, and utility infrastructure coordination, as well as experience working with cross-functional project and operations teams in a fast-paced, global environment.
The lead power systems engineer will be responsible for professionally representing Cloud HQ’s Development team across multiple functions within the organisation as well as outside of the company.
This role will be the primary technical point of contact from the Development team in respect of utility connections and delivery of utility connections to sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate with and support (from a technical perspective) Cloud HQ’s EMEA Energy Lead in negotiations with utilities and grid operators to secure power capacity and manage interconnection processes.
- Liaise with the EMEA Infrastructure Manager to ensure a coordinated approach to delivering power solutions across the region.
- Provide guidance around utilities procurement, design, and delivery. Lead the design of power connections for new Cloud HQ projects.
- Lead infrastructure design and technical delivery for hyperscale data center developments across EMEA.
- Oversee all aspects of power infrastructure - from utility interconnection to onsite substation design.
- Work closely with engineering design consultants, contractors, and equipment vendors to ensure technical and commercial alignment.
- Develop and maintain regional infrastructure standards, specifications, and commissioning protocols.
- Evaluate design proposals and value-engineering options for efficiency, reliability, and cost optimization.
- Manage and track infrastructure budgets, schedules, and performance KPIs across multiple concurrent projects.
- Support operational readiness by ensuring seamless transition from construction to commissioning and turnover to data center operations.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders (Project Management, Energy, Operations, Finance, and Legal) to ensure alignment with business goals and delivery timelines.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for HV/MV power systems, UPS, MV/LV distribution, generators, and monitoring systems (SCADA/BMS/EMS).
- Stay current with regional regulations, permitting requirements, and sustainability initiatives related to power and infrastructure.
- Work with the wider Cloud HQ design teams and external consultants to deliver all permits required for utility connections.
Be a key part of the Cloud HQ Development team managing all consultants to deliver best safety, best quality, best value for Cloud HQ and our customers.
- Function as primary technical point of contact with all utility providers, local authorities, municipalities etc.
- Champion Cloud HQ initiatives on all projects.
- Develop creative solutions and innovations to help streamline processes.
- Adhere to company safety standards and help promote a safe working environment for office and field employees, subcontractors, and clients.

- Required Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in design and delivery of utility connections or similar complex technical projects across EMEA; Data Centre experience preferred.
- Background in complex industrial, grid infrastructure, pharmaceutical, or mission critical / high-tech development preferred if no data centre experience.
- Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in German, French, Italian and/or Spanish is highly desirable.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to solve problems using analysis, technical and organizational expertise.
- Strong understanding of high-voltage and medium-voltage systems, substations, switchgear, UPS, generators, and cooling systems.
- Proven experience working with utilities on grid interconnection, permitting, and capacity planning.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multi-site projects from concept through commissioning.
- Familiarity with design standards and best practices (e. g., Uptime Institute, IEC, ISO, EN, or local codes).
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on reliability and operational excellence.
- Ability to use independent judgement and sound decision-making skills in situations that impact design, project timetables, direction, and outcome.
- Ability to independently supervise a development, construction, or design project.
- Responsible attitude with strong work ethic; leading by example in attendance, attitude, and technical work product.
