Available Location: London, UK or Lisbon, Portugal - with the expectation of at least 2 days per week of in-office attendance.

Role Summary

The Traffic Management team is responsible for the systems that optimize the flow of traffic into, through, and from Cloudflare's global network. They manage traffic for millions of customers, from individual websites to major enterprises. This team is at the heart of Cloudflare's mission to make the internet faster, safer, and more reliable.

Role Responsibilities

  • As an Engineering Manager in this group you will hire, mentor, and coach a distributed team of Software Engineers.
  • You will play a key role in developing the team and shaping its culture and technical vision.
  • Using tools and processes to convey project status and resolve blockages.
  • Understanding technical implications of work in order to influence scope, work across teams, and help unblock projects.
  • Taking responsibility for production services by organizing on-call rotations, handling customer escalations, and overseeing incident response and follow-up.
  • You will work closely with Product Managers and other Engineering leaders to communicate the vision, prioritize the team's roadmap, and achieve cross-functional objectives.
  • You are a growth-oriented individual who enjoys being outside of your comfort zone.
  • You value curiosity and empathy and lead with these values.

Role Requirements

Must-Have Skills

  • 3+ years experience as an Engineering Manager for a team of Software and Systems Engineers.
  • Demonstrate a track record of managing a team including hiring, onboarding, and professional development.
  • Excel at planning and overseeing execution to meet commitments and deliver with predictability.
  • Technical background in technologies such as Layer 3 and Layer 4 networking and HTTP, TLS, and CDN networks.
  • Experience with monitoring, alerting, and debugging large-scale distributed systems.
  • Experience implementing tools, process, internal instrumentation, methodologies and resolving blockages.
  • Experience participating in and/or managing an on‑call rotation.
  • Clarity in written and verbal communication.

Bonus Points

  • Knowledge of TCP/IP and Internet routing.
  • Systems-level programming experience in Go, Python, Rust, C, or C++.
  • Knowledge of statistical-analysis techniques and control theory.
  • Experience building tools and APIs.
