Climate17 is working with a fast-growing specialist engineering consultancy that is expanding its electricity networks team. We’re looking to appoint an experienced Lead Electrical Substation Design Engineer to play a key role in delivering grid connection and network infrastructure projects across the UK’s rapidly growing renewable energy sector. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced substation design engineer who enjoys technically challenging work, mentoring junior engineers and working closely with clients to develop practical, high-quality engineering solutions.

The Role

  • You’ll lead the design and delivery of substation projects, with a particular focus on 33kV and 132kV distribution networks, supporting the connection of renewable energy developments including solar PV, battery energy storage (BESS) and onshore and offshore wind projects.
  • Working across the electricity networks sector, you’ll be responsible for developing connection solutions and producing detailed engineering designs for a wide range of distribution and grid infrastructure projects.
  • Leading substation design projects from concept through to detailed engineering.
  • Producing and reviewing single line diagrams, key line diagrams, substation layouts and elevations.
  • Specifying primary plant equipment.
  • Carrying out engineering design reviews to ensure compliance with UK standards and client specifications.
  • Supporting renewable energy grid connection projects.
  • Working closely with clients, network operators and key project stakeholders.
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers.
  • Supporting or leading power system studies where appropriate.

About You

  • We’re keen to hear from engineers who can demonstrate:
  • 5+ years’ experience within the UK electricity networks industry.
  • Strong substation design experience, particularly at 33kV and/or 132kV.
  • Excellent AutoCAD capability with proven primary plant design experience.
  • Experience specifying primary plant equipment.
  • Good understanding of protection schemes, control and interlocking philosophies.
  • Strong knowledge of UK transmission and distribution codes and standards.
  • Experience carrying out engineering design reviews.
  • Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.
  • A collaborative approach with the ability to mentor and develop others.
  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline would be advantageous.
