The Subject Matter Expert for Scope 2 is a crucial functional expert role responsible for contributing technical expertise to the development of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard and other cross-sector resources. The SME, Scope 2 will lead the development of work streams related to Scope 2 and corporate energy sourcing, integrating scientific research and data into actionable and robust standards. Working closely with senior roles and cross-functional teams, this position ensures that outputs are technically robust, aligned with best practices, and support organisational objectives. It also exemplifies respectful behaviour, open communication, and integrity, embodying SBTi’s values and supports a positive, healthy work culture. This role plays an important part in determining what constitutes credible corporate sourcing of zero-carbon energy and integrating this into SBTi Standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provides subject matter expertise to inform the development of SBTi’s technical outputs related to Scope 2 and energy sourcing, such as standards, guidance or explanatory documents, tools etc.
  • Collaborates with senior team members to draft, review, and finalise major outputs, including the Corporate Net-Zero Standard, in line with SBTi’s Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Monitors emerging trends, research, and policies relevant to the organisation's work to maintain cutting-edge expertise and collaborates with the research team in advancing subject matter expertise within the SBTi.
  • Prepares material, e.g. presentations, webinars, workshops to disseminate key findings and/or gather further input from internal and external stakeholders and delivers this material independently and/or in collaboration with Product Owner / Lead.
  • Contributes to cross-departmental collaboration to maximise the impact and applicability of their work.
  • Acts as day-to-day contact of external technical partners.

Essential skills and experience needed:

  • 7+ years of professional experience in the relevant field, demonstrating solid knowledge in standard-setting, GHG accounting, science-based target-setting and decarbonisation of the corporate sector, with a focus on zero carbon and renewable energy.
  • Strong track record of delivering assigned responsibilities on time and to high standards.
  • Experience in standard writing, research and data analysis, with the ability to synthesise complex information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in relevant tools and software required for the role to be successful.
  • Expert knowledge of market-based instruments and their role in driving a clean, efficient energy system.
  • Strong project and people management capabilities, with a track record of leading collaborative efforts in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Experience in convening multi-stakeholder consultation processes.
  • Ideally, experience working within a formal standard-setting organization and knowledge of ISEAL Codes of Good Practice.

This is a full-time role and the location is London. This role is a fixed-term contract for 12 months with the possibility of extension. Interested candidates should be legally allowed to work in the countries specified. The SBTi cannot sponsor any working visas.
