This is an excellent fixed term opportunity for a self‑motivated lawyer with climate law or climate litigation experience to make a key contribution to the work of ClientEarth’s Accountable Corporations team. The team, which sits within the Financial & Economic System (Europe) group, uses a range of laws, including corporate, financial, environmental, public and human rights laws to influence private actors with the objective (among others) of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement, reducing deforestation and biodiversity loss and otherwise supporting resilient ecosystems, healthy air and water, and societies that are just, fair and equitable.

The role will include working on corporate climate litigation, supporting our legal strategies relevant to energy sector and energy markets.

Main duties
  • Assisting with proposed and ongoing corporate climate litigation including taking responsibility for agreed workstreams, researching points of law and evidence, preparing and inputting into argumentation and analysis, dealing with experts, dealing with disclosure/discovery and supporting external counsel.
  • Contributing to strategy for corporate climate accountability, analysing legal and market developments and ‘seeing the bigger picture’.
  • Preparing high‑quality written work and analysis – for example, independently planning and progressing analysis, producing strong factual and legal research, and producing work product designed to communicate our thinking to a wide variety of legal, policy, political, civil society and interdisciplinary audiences.
Role requirements
  • Law degree or equivalent.
  • Relevant legal professional qualification, with qualification in a European civil law jurisdiction or the UK.
  • Legal practice experience.
  • Experience working on climate law issues.
  • A demonstrated interest and understanding of corporate climate litigation, Business & Human Rights frameworks and/or related issues.
