The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is the global trade association for the maritime transport sector, which moves 90% of world trade. ICS works closely with its member national shipowners' associations in 40 countries, whose member shipping companies operate more than 80% of world merchant tonnage. Established in 1921, ICS is concerned with all regulatory issues that affect this major global industry. To represent the interests of the world’s shipowners with their intergovernmental regulatory bodies, the ICS Secretariat administers specialist committees which determine ICS policy positions. The Shipping Policy Committee (SPC) ensures the smooth operation of shipping’s global regulatory framework and promotes free trade principles. It liaises with United Nations agencies and bodies such as the WTO and OECD to advocate for international shipping interests, as well as with key economies, such as the United States, China and the European Union.
