Assistant Director of Law - Code Enforcement
The Law Department’s Code Enforcement section works with various City of Cleveland departments to enforce the city’s building, housing, zoning, fire, health and sidewalk ordinances to obtain compliance with the code and improve quality of life for residents. The section is seeking an attorney who will focus on criminal prosecution and civil litigation to enforce the City’s ordinances and procedures, including working to design and perfect processes for effective enforcement of strategic code enforcement by the City’s Department of Building and Housing.
Examples of Duties
- Help design and implement processes for enforcing the City’s lead paint ordinances and regulations.
- Handle civil cases and criminal prosecutions in the Cleveland Housing Court.
- Defend appeals of Housing Court cases in the Court of Appeals.
- Represent City departments before local and state administrative appeal boards and handle appeals of the Board decisions in Common Pleas court and the Court of Appeals.
- Conduct legal review of various documents related to prosecution, demolition and other nuisance abatement activities.
- Interact with inspectors, managers, council members and the public to address inquiries and complaints.
- Handle subpoenas and public records requests, and participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and in good standing with the Ohio Supreme Court. The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to public service, with some prosecution or litigation experience preferred, but not essential. The candidate must be hard‑working, self‑motivated, technically proficient, and detail‑oriented. The candidate must be able to work with staff from other City departments to create and perfect new processes that will enable the City to pursue strategic code enforcement. The candidate should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to interact effectively with clients, management and the general public.
