We are currently recruiting freelance translators for Pashto English, and Dari English, to work on self-employed contracts who can help to meet our clients’ needs.

What we expect from our linguists

Essential Skills

  • A fluent (native) understanding of at least one foreign language.
  • Excellent writing skills and command of grammar both in your mother tongue and English.
  • Native fluency in target and source languages – spoken and written subject matter knowledge specific to the content provided.
  • Knowledge of CAT tools.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Time management skills and ability to work quickly to meet deadlines.
  • The ability to use initiative and have self-motivation.

Desirable Skills

  • A solid understanding and in-depth knowledge of language/country-specific cultures usually gained by living and working there for a prolonged period of time.
  • An academic degree in the source language or in another subject which could lead to a specialist subject area.
  • Living, studying, or working in a bilingual environment or working in the language industry.
  • Proficiency in the use of a range of computer packages – knowledge of translation-oriented applications and software is helpful.
  • Enthusiasm for acquiring knowledge.

Qualifications, Experience and Memberships

At least one of the following plus relevant experience (with documented evidence):

  • A recognized graduate qualification in translation from an institution of higher education;
  • A recognized graduate qualification in any other field from an institution of higher education plus two years of full-time professional experience in translating;
  • Five years of full-time professional experience in translating;
  • CIOL Qualifications Level 7 Diploma in Translation (DipTrans), (DPI level 4&5 in translation for rare languages);
  • CIOL Level 6 Certificate in Translation (CertTrans);
  • Full membership of a renowned translation institution (ITI, CIOL, for example).

You must also be able to provide:

  • Evidence that you are eligible to work in the UK (if UK based).
  • Provide a valid DBS certificate (or be willing to apply for one if UK based) or Police Check Certificate (non-UK).
  • 2 Professional References.
  • Agree to provide a test translation free of charge.
