Our client is a well-established and ambitious professional services firm, seeking an Accounts & Tax Manager to join their Barnstaple office. This is a senior role managing a portfolio of clients while overseeing the delivery of high-quality accounting and tax services. The position also involves leading and developing a team, with a strong focus on client relationships, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement.

The Role

  • You will take responsibility for managing a portfolio of clients, ensuring the timely delivery of year-end accounts, tax returns, and financial statements, while maintaining strong client relationships and high professional standards.
  • You will also play a key role in supervising and developing junior staff and supporting the smooth running of the accounts function.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Managing a portfolio of clients, ensuring timely completion of accounts and tax work while maintaining profitability.
  • Preparing and reviewing year-end accounts for sole traders, partnerships, charities, and limited companies in line with relevant accounting standards.
  • Preparing, reviewing, and approving tax computations and returns.
  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships, including attending meetings and providing advisory support.
  • Allocating and managing workflow across the team to ensure deadlines and resource requirements are met.
  • Supervising, mentoring, and reviewing the work of junior team members.
  • Monitoring team performance and supporting ongoing development.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in tax legislation and sharing knowledge across the team and clients.

About You

  • ACA or ACCA qualified.
  • Strong general practice experience within an accountancy environment.
  • Proven ability to manage client portfolios and lead small teams.
  • Strong technical knowledge of accounting standards and tax compliance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a client‑focused approach.
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail and analytical ability.
  • Confident using cloud accounting platforms and modern accounting systems.
