We are seeking a Global Communications Lead to increase international media and recognition for Breathe Cities among city leaders, policymakers, and funders. The role owns the communications strategy that positions the initiative as the leading model for urban air quality action, shaping narrative and messaging, delivering impactful media and digital cut-through, and amplifying city-level communications in regional and global fora.
Key responsibilities include:
- Translate complex evidence into clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
- Manage a communications team across a multi-partner initiative, ensuring editorial quality and high-standard output.
- Lead and develop teams and agencies to deliver high-quality communications outcomes.
- Work confidently with senior leaders, city leadership and partners, balancing pace with rigour in a multi-stakeholder environment.
- Advise senior leaders and spokespersons in high-stakes, reputation-sensitive contexts, anticipating flashpoints and tailoring messages.
- Shape narratives and secure high-quality earned media coverage, including features, comment, op-eds and spokesperson profiling.
- Maintain risk, accuracy and credibility judgment, staying calm under pressure and handling reactive moments.
- Utilise Microsoft 365 tools, cloud-based platforms such as Microsoft Teams and SharePoint, with a solid understanding of basic cyber security and data protection hygiene.
Essential qualifications:
- Senior communications experience across philanthropy, international NGO, government/cities or public interest communications.
- Sound judgment and discretion with a strong understanding of city government decision-making and the ability to navigate fast-moving stakeholder environments diplomatically.
- Proven experience managing agencies and developing teams within complex, multi-stakeholder organisations.
- Leadership experience in developing strategic alignment and agile delivery mechanisms.
- Track record of advising senior leaders/spokespeople in high-stakes contexts.
- Strong narrative skill and record of securing quality earned media coverage.
- Excellent writing and editing skills across press materials, speeches, talking points and briefings.
- Experienced user of Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint and cloud-based platforms with good cyber security hygiene.
