Job overview

We are looking for an experienced, motivated and enthusiastic Specialist Podiatrist – Diabetes (Band 7) to join our Community Podiatry Service in Harrow.

This is an exciting opportunity for a podiatrist with specialist expertise in diabetes, high-risk foot care, wound management and peripheral vascular disease to take on a senior clinical role within our service.

As a Specialist Podiatrist, you will work across community services, providing high-quality specialist assessment, treatment and management for patients with complex and high-risk foot conditions. You will work closely with colleagues across community, primary and acute care, helping to strengthen relationships between services and support effective, streamlined diabetic foot pathways.

We are looking for someone who can work confidently and autonomously while contributing positively to the wider multidisciplinary team. You will bring strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills, excellent communication and a commitment to delivering safe, evidence-based and person-centred care.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Podiatrist in Diabetes, you will

Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management for patients with complex diabetic and high-risk foot conditions, including wounds and peripheral vascular disease

Manage an autonomous specialist caseload, using advanced clinical reasoning to develop evidence-based, person-centred treatment plans and reduce the risk of deterioration, ulceration and amputation

Work collaboratively across community, primary and acute care services to support effective diabetic foot pathways and ensure patients receive timely, coordinated care

Provide specialist advice and clinical expertise to podiatry colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team, supporting the management of complex patients

Identify and appropriately escalated patients requiring urgent intervention or referral to specialist multidisciplinary diabetic foot services

Contribute to the development and improvement of podiatry services through clinical audit, evidence-based practice, quality improvement and service evaluation

Support, supervise and mentor junior podiatrists, students and other members of the team, promoting learning and professional development

Educate and empower patients to understand their condition, recognise risks and participate in the management of their foot health

Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure practice is delivered in line with professional standards, local policies and clinical governance requirements

Person specification

Education/Qualification

  • Registration with Health Professions Council.
  • Certificate in Local Anaesthesia.
  • Evidence or Portfolio of post-grad Continued Development
  • Experience of service delivery in acute and community settings.
  • Evidence of Specialist study and training in Diabetes e.g. SOCAP/COP/RCOP Diabetic Foot Module; Post graduate study.
  • Experience of working at a Band 6 level or above and evidence of working with a high-risk caseload, specifically diabetes in an acute and community setting.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary and inter‑agency working.
  • Ionising Radiation (medical exposure) Regulations Training
  • Training in requesting and interpretation of investigations relevant to diabetic foot complications

Experience

  • Experience of service delivery in acute and community settings
  • Experience of working at a Band 6 level or above and evidence of working with a high-risk caseload, specifically diabetes in an acute and community setting.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary and inter‑agency working

Skills & Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge in the management of the diabetic foot and general medical diabetes management.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NICE Diabetes clinical guidelines and NSF in Diabetes
  • Good inter-personal skills needed to liaise with Diabetes Consultants and other specialists in this field.
  • Organisational and planning skills to manage your own work time
  • Ability to deal professionally and objectively with distressing/uncomfortable situations, e.g. terminally ill patients, child abuse, providing guidance to team members where appropriate
  • The ability to maintain up to date clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Knowledge and application of clinical governance.
  • Knowledge of diversity issues and ability to work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

  • Hold a full, valid, UK driving licence and have access to a car to use for business purposes (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010)
