Claxton is currently looking to hire a Senior Engineer to join the team on a full-time, permanent basis. Ideally based at our facility in Aberdeen however location is flexible. The Senior Engineer contributes to the design, development and delivery of mechanical systems and products, from concept and analysis through to workshop build, testing, commissioning, and offshore execution. The role combines technical execution, design assurance, commercial awareness, and hands-on involvement, supporting bids, leading engineering scopes, and mentoring junior engineers.
This position requires broad engineering capability across structural design, lifting and rigging interfaces, hydraulic and electro-hydraulic control systems, drive trains (gears, gearboxes, motors, leadscrews) and mechanical motion mechanisms. The engineer will apply Claxton technologies to create practical, fit-for-purpose solutions that meet functional, safety and schedule requirements while maintaining an appropriate level of engineering detail. The role operates in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple tasks and priorities while working collaboratively across disciplines. Strong communication skills and the flexibility to support workshop activities and offshore operations (as required) are essential, alongside a commitment to professional development and maintaining high engineering standards.
Duties & Main Responsibilities
- Commercial
- Create Functional Design Specifications (FDS) for new product development, projects, and enquiries.
- Assist with the evaluation of tender bid documents to assess readiness, risks, technical capability, including available information.
- Determine if a FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) study is required to support an enquiry and provide the necessary inputs, timeframes, and deliverables for a commercial quotation.
- Develop and input design plans into the engineering hours template for projects and quotations, specifying tasks, timeframes, material costs, and contingencies.
- Contribute to risk registers for projects and new product development, providing comprehensive engineering insights.
- Manage detailed design plans for projects and new product development, monitoring progress across assigned tasks.
- Support initiatives to address the Cost of Poor Quality (CoPQ) by identifying areas where CoPQ occurs, assisting with investigations, and supporting strategies to reduce its impact.
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure lessons learned are effectively captured and shared across the Claxton group, driving continuous improvement.
- Improve the efficiency of engineering tasks by streamlining repetitive processes, introducing templates, guidelines, and automated workflows to optimise time and minimise resource use.
- Attend client and external meetings, providing in-person and remote engineering support and expertise.
- Lead investigations into incidents involving company operations, equipment, or processes as required.
- Maintain engineering procedures, records, and software solutions in line with industry requirements, ensuring processes remain robust and up to date with evolving standards, regulations, and technological advancements.
- Leverage emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced software tools, to drive innovation, enhance design processes, and ensure the organisation remains at the forefront of industry developments.
- Mentor junior engineers, fostering continuous development and alignment with cutting-edge methodologies, industry standards, and advancements in engineering software and tools.
- Support collaboration across multiple locations to standardise practices and achieve consistency in quality and performance.
- Oversee the development and refinement of technical content for new and existing products, ensuring designs meet compliance, functionality, and market expectations.
- Manage internal projects aimed at improving existing product offerings based on operational feedback, market demands, and technological advancements.
- Create, review, and maintain design manuals for new and standard equipment, ensuring they are accurate and up to date.
- Provide hands-on engineering support during onshore build, assembly, FAT/SAT testing, and commissioning activities, ensuring designs translate effectively from concept to physical execution.
- Support technical set-up of equipment during early deployment phases, particularly for newly developed or first-off tooling and systems.
- Act as Lead Engineer on large or technically complex projects.
- Perform design verification activities, such as FEA and hand calculations, to support key projects.
- Identify and resolve design issues based on analysis outputs.
- Produce detailed drawings and documents as required.
- Review and approve drawings, designs, calculations, and FEA produced by team members.
- Oversee the design process for new builds and modifications, ensuring compliance with IMS and ISO9001 standards.
- Manage design elements of projects, collaborating with Project Engineers to align timelines, QA, manufacturing, and third-party verification, while ensuring the design process balances technical quality, cost-effectiveness, and client expectations.
- Chair and document Design Review meetings, ensuring all necessary inputs are addressed effectively.
- Contribute engineering expertise to kick-off, design review, and project planning meetings to align project objectives.
- Provide engineering support for design, build, testing, commissioning, and operational activities.
- Oversee design documentation, ensuring consistency and accessibility through PDM systems.
- Work closely with workshop and operations teams to resolve real-time mechanical, hydraulic, and assembly challenges, ensuring equipment is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with design intent.
- Participate directly in FAT, SIT and equipment readiness verification for both standard and bespoke solutions.
- Provide offshore execution support when required, including overseeing installation, operation, troubleshooting, and performance validation of newly designed or modified systems.
Required
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with IMechE or an equivalent professional body.
- Proficiency in 2D and 3D design software, including SolidWorks and FEA tools.
- Expertise in mathematical analysis using traditional methods and software packages such as Ansys, SolidWorks Simulation and Mathcad.
- Broad knowledge of mechanical and structural design, lifting and rigging considerations, hydraulic and electro-hydraulic control systems, drive trains (gears, gearboxes, motors, leadscrews) and mechanical motion mechanisms.
- Experience with ROV/diver-deployed subsea or surface tooling and associated control systems is beneficial.
- Comprehensive knowledge of compiling and conducting risk analysis methodologies such as FMECA and industry-standard design practices as required.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 design control standards and Oil & Gas industry specifications (e.g. ASME, DNV, API, ISO, EN, AISC and CE marking).
- Practical experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Minimum of 8 years' experience in mechanical engineering within an engineering environment.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience designing and engineering in the oil & gas industry.
- Proven track record of product conceptualisation, development, and commercialisation.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including client presentations.
- Proven ability to manage large, complex engineering projects within time and budget constraints.
- Strong commercial awareness, identifying project risks and resource requirements early.
- Ability to implement process improvements, contributing to organisational innovation and growth.
- Skilled in mentoring and developing technical personnel to maintain engineering standards.
- Demonstrated problem-solving acumen with a structured and analytical approach.
