Some jobs feel meaningful. Some jobs pretend to be meaningful. This one? It actually is.
What you’ll be doing:
You’ll be working in the local community and at specialist learning hubs in and around Sutton-in-Ashfield, alongside a committed team—all focused on creating the best possible outcomes for the children they support. This is not a “stand at the back and hand out worksheets” role. You’ll be working with children who don’t always thrive in mainstream school—the ones who need a bit more patience, a bit more flexibility, and a bit more you. Some days you’ll be in libraries. Some days in community hubs. Some days out and about. But always with a child who benefits from your attention, consistency, and creativity. You’ll play a real part in shaping a personalised curriculum. You won’t be a spare part—you’ll be a trusted member of a team that “gets it” and behaves accordingly.
The essentials:
- You must drive and feel genuinely confident transporting a child in your own car from time to time. (You’ll need to add business use to your car insurance for this.)
- Experience working in a school? Not essential.
- Experience with children? Absolutely essential.
If you’ve worked in:
- sports coaching
- youth work
- residential care
- tutoring
- support work…or any other proper hands-on role with young people, you’re already on the right track.
People who usually do well here:
- Actually like children (sounds obvious, but it matters)
- Can stay calm and patient on the tougher days
- Focus on building trust and relationships—not barking instructions
- Believe education should flex around the child, not the other way round
- Care about making a long-term difference, not just clocking in and out
