Are you from a sports background and looking for meaningful work? Have you ever thought about using your sports experience to make a real difference in children’s lives? Why not become a Teaching Assistant, supporting children with special educational needs (SEND)? Make a real difference — your success will be measured in smiles. Be the person a child remembers long into adulthood.
Classroom Recruiters are looking for Sports Specialists to work across schools in Belper, Matlock, and the surrounding areas as Teaching Assistants supporting children with special educational needs. We’ve had great success recruiting fantastic staff from a wide range of sports backgrounds. Many people who started in sport have gone on to build very successful careers in SEND settings. In fact, some of the most successful SEND schools in the East Midlands are led by Head Teachers and senior leaders who originally started out as sports coaches or PE teachers.
What You’ll Do
This role is about far more than simply supporting in the classroom — it’s about building meaningful relationships that help children thrive and grow in confidence. You’ll be supporting children who need a positive role model — someone who is consistent, calm, and encouraging. Some days you may be working 1:1 with a pupil who finds school challenging, helping them re-engage with learning. On other days, you may support small groups or assist across the classroom, helping children with everyday lessons ranging from core subjects to vocational activities. Progress doesn’t always happen overnight in SEND settings, so patience and resilience are essential. But when it does happen — when a child you’ve supported starts to believe in themselves — it makes every bit of effort worthwhile.
Why People from Sports Backgrounds Excel in These Roles
We’ve seen incredible success from people with sporting backgrounds. You already understand how to lead, motivate, encourage, and stay consistent. You bring energy, creativity, and belief — the same qualities that help children succeed when school feels challenging. If you’ve coached, mentored, or supported young people before, you likely already have many of the core skills needed for this role. Add a good sense of humour and a calm head under pressure, and you’ll fit right in.
