Role Overview

The Financial Accountant will act as the Finance Director’s key number two, taking ownership of core finance processes and ensuring the finance function runs smoothly, accurately, and on time. Initially, the focus will be on strong execution: maintaining clean accounts, running month‑end, managing purchase ledger, payroll, VAT, audit preparation, cashflow reporting, and supporting budgets and projections. Over time, the role is expected to broaden into more commercial finance, forecasting, analysis, and decision‑support work as the business scales.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Own the day‑to‑day finance operation, ensuring transactions are processed accurately and on time.
  • Manage purchase ledger, supplier payments, reconciliations, and expense processes.
  • Maintain accurate bookkeeping and general ledger integrity.
  • Ensure balance sheet reconciliations are completed regularly and reviewed appropriately.
  • Improve the quality, consistency, and reliability of finance processes as the business scales.

Month‑end & Management Accounts

  • Lead the month‑end close process, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet, cashflow, and supporting analysis.
  • Investigate variances and provide clear commentary on financial performance.
  • Support the Finance Director in producing reporting packs for senior leadership and stakeholders.

Payroll, VAT, Tax & Compliance

  • Manage payroll processes, working with external providers where relevant.
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns.
  • Support statutory reporting, tax compliance, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure finance processes are audit‑ready.

Audit & Year‑end

  • Coordinate the annual audit process and act as a key point of contact for auditors.
  • Prepare audit schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Help resolve audit queries efficiently and ensure deadlines are met.

Cashflow, Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Prepare and maintain cashflow reporting and short‑term cash visibility.
  • Support the Finance Director with annual budgets, forecasts, and financial projections.
  • Help improve forecasting accuracy and reporting discipline.
  • Provide analysis to support decision‑making across the business.

Process Improvement & Scalability

  • Identify opportunities to improve finance systems, controls, and ways of working.
  • Help build a finance function that can scale with the business.
  • Reduce dependency on the Finance Director for routine finance operations.
  • Bring structure, ownership, and reliability to core finance processes.

What You’ll Bring

  • Qualified Accountant – ICAS, ICAEW, ACCA or CIMA.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and attention to detail.
  • Strong Excel skills and confidence working with financial data.
  • Highly organised, reliable, and able to manage deadlines without heavy supervision.
  • Hands‑on mindset – willing to get into the detail and make sure things are right.
