Main Scope of Post

To ensure general maintenance and undertake simple repairs for the equipment within the Electrical/Electronic Engineering area. To provide assistance to lecturers in preparing equipment and resources for teaching and learning, supervise students during practical lessons, be responsible for maintaining tools and equipment to an efficient level and carry out risk assessments and recommend improvements to ensure all aspects of health and safety are complied with.

Duties
  • To regularly service and maintain tools and equipment within the Electrical/Electronic Engineering (Power and Robotics Lab, PLCs and Mechatronics Lab, Electronics Lab, LN Experiments Lab) area and keep an up-to-date maintenance record.
  • To carry out risk assessment in conjunction with the Course Team Leader, Section Manager and Head of School and recommend improvements.
  • To report any major maintenance tasks to the Section Manager/Head of School to ensure the least impact to teaching and learning.
  • To raise purchase order request forms in order to maintain stock levels of materials and tools at a level which enables effective teaching and learning.
  • To produce and update equipment, tools and consumable list in the section.
  • To maintain cleanliness of teaching environments within the area of responsibility.
  • To liaise with Head of School to ensure that all areas comply with health and safety and environmental requirements.
  • To supervise, with or without the Lecturer, students working within the laboratories with respect to hardware, software, health and safety and good working practice issues.
  • To assist course teams in preparing materials and resources for teaching and learning.
  • To assist the lecturer in setting up equipment for teaching and learning within the post holder’s area of responsibility.
  • To demonstrate equipment to students if requested by Lecturers.
  • To supervise students during practical support, project lessons or directed study including during evenings.
  • To work with other technicians to ensure continuity of provision across the School of Engineering.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • At least 2 years’ experience with electrical equipment, PLCs, robotics and mechatronics
  • Up-to-date knowledge of Health and Safety requirements applied to workshop environment
  • Industrial experience in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • Experience and ability to use various higher education software such as Multisim, Matlab, PLC, Verilog, Labview, C Programming
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with young people
  • IT skills or willingness to develop them
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Continuing professional development
