Clarkwell & Co is a London-based firm of Accountants and Tax Advisors supporting SMEs, directors, consultants, and landlords. We are growing quickly and we take pride in doing things properly: good systems, strong client service, and work that stands up to scrutiny.

We are looking for an experienced Practice Manager to oversee day-to-day delivery, manage workflows and deadlines, support the team, and help the firm run smoothly as we expand.

This is a hands-on Practice Manager role, based in our London office. You will work closely with the Director and accounts team to manage compliance production, improve internal processes, ensure quality control, and keep jobs moving on time. You will need strong UK practice experience, confidence managing deadlines, and the ability to lead by example.

Key responsibilities
  • Manage the practice workflow across accounts, corporation tax, VAT, bookkeeping, payroll, and personal tax.
  • Allocate work across the team and monitor progress to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Review work for accuracy, completeness, and consistency before partner/manager sign-off where required.
  • Improve internal systems, templates, checklists, and job tracking so nothing slips through the cracks.
  • Keep client records, tracking, and compliance notes organised and audit-ready.
  • Prepare and/or review statutory accounts and corporation tax computations.
  • Oversee bookkeeping and VAT return preparation, ensuring correct treatment and clean reconciliations.
  • Support personal tax returns for landlords, directors, and higher-complexity individuals.
  • Manage Companies House filings: incorporations, confirmation statements, director changes, and statutory registers (where applicable).
  • Support PAYE and VAT registrations and ensure correct set-up procedures.
  • Act as a senior point of contact for clients and handle escalations professionally.
  • Drive proactive communication: timelines, document requests, progress updates, and completion messages.
  • Support onboarding: engagement letters, AML checks, HMRC authorisations, and software access.
  • Build long-term client relationships with consistent service standards.
  • Support and supervise the accounts team day-to-day.
  • Coach and develop junior staff to improve speed, accuracy, and confidence.
  • Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and training processes as the practice grows.
  • Help maintain a professional, structured office environment and culture.
Requirements (essential)
  • Minimum 4 years’ UK accountancy practice experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK compliance: statutory accounts, corporation tax, VAT, bookkeeping, and personal tax.
  • Excellent organisation and ability to manage multiple deadlines and client jobs.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in quality.
  • Confident communication skills (clients and team).
  • Proactive mindset: you spot issues early and fix them, rather than waiting for problems to land.
Desirable
  • AAT / ACCA / ACA qualified (or qualified by experience).
  • Previous experience supervising staff or managing workflow.
  • Strong exposure to practice software (accounts production, bookkeeping, tax software, document management).
Working hours and location
  • Full-time: 40 hours per week.
  • Office-based role at 32–33 Upper Street, London N1 0PN.
Benefits
  • Company pension.
  • UK visa sponsorship (available for the right candidate, subject to eligibility).
  • Training and development opportunities.
  • Clear progression in a growing firm.
