The role of the Electrical Engineer is to design, develop and manage the technical and electrical requirements of the business. The engineer will integrate, test, and maintain electrical and electronic systems for vehicles, electric vehicle (EV) systems, and custom auxiliary systems and new OEM hardware/software. You will work closely with mechanical engineers and project managers to deliver safe, reliable, and innovative conversion solutions.
The role also includes training, coaching and development of the personnel ensuring that the electrical team have the skillset required to fulfil their roles in the electrical department. The role will focus heavily on identifying and implementing technologic advances, owning the design, validation and sign‑off of 12/24V electrical systems for vehicle conversions, ensuring safe, compliant, cost‑effective solutions that are production‑ready, right‑first‑time, and type‑approval aligned.
Typical Job Functions & Duties
- Ownership & lead of all electrical aspects for vehicle conversion
- Project management of electrical development, issue processing and improvements
- Develop electrical solutions for vehicles conversions using wiring diagrams/schematics
- Specify and integrate components such as batteries, inverters, chargers, control systems, lighting and various other electrical loads
- Ownership of the electrical issue log
- Responsible for creating/amending electrical SOP’s.
- Oversee the installation of electrical systems during conversion projects.
- Collaborate with mechanical teams to integrate electrical systems within vehicle constraints.
- Conduct system validation, load testing, fault-finding, and debugging of electrical systems.
- Develop and implement testing protocols to ensure reliability and safety.
- Troubleshoot hardware and software issues (CAN bus, controllers, sensors, actuators, wiring & output devices).
- Provide technical input during concept design and feasibility studies.
- Assist in component selection, supplier liaison, and cost analysis.
- Prepare documentation, technical reports, and support regulatory certification processes.
- Ensure conversion designs are compliance with base vehicle manufacturer conversions requirements
- Responsible for creating effective departmental processes and controls in line with QMS
- Recognise and implement improvements through continuous monitoring
- Responsible for providing training, development, coaching and mentoring of personnel ensuring the correct skillset is available for all required electrical works
- Carry out electrical programming focusing on RFT
- Manage and regularly engage with internal/external parties to ensure the company receive the required level of service to drive the business forward
- Keep abreast and report on changes within the industry
- Identify and implement technological advances
- Support electrical fitters with any relevant documents including sop’s, photos, and drawings necessary to complete builds
- Source alternative product where necessary to support builds
- Maintain good house keeping
- Implement and uphold health and safety protocols
- Engage customers, suppliers and business contacts as required
- Follow up corrective actions and implement measures to minimise problems or faults
Qualifications & Experience
- Leadership role – 2+ years
- Electrical Engineering qualifications – Level 4 +
- Electrical engineering role experience – 5+ years
- Proven experience in automotive or vehicle conversion projects (EVs, hybrids, Commercial, leisure, emergency vehicles; internal combustion & electric vehicles).
Strong knowledge of:
- High-voltage and low-voltage vehicle systems - Low (230V) and extra low voltage (12/24V)
- Battery systems
- Power electronics (inverters, chargers, converters)
- CAN bus communication and diagnostic tools
- Add solar charging, wiring harness design, automotive connectors
