The Electoral Commission is an independent body that makes sure elections in the UK are fair, open, and well run. They ensure its integrity as well as help everyone understand how to vote and feel confident in taking part. They also regulate the money that political parties and campaigners spend and receive, checking it is fair, transparent, and legal. Established in 2000, the Commission has over 200 staff, based across the UK with offices in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Belfast.

Their statutory responsibilities are integral to the electoral system – whether regulating political finance laws; providing oversight, guidance, or support on the delivery of elections; supporting voters to engage with the democratic process with confidence; or providing evidence and insights to inform future improvement. Working with others, the Electoral Commission strives to improve the electoral system for the benefit of voters, campaigners, and electoral administrators.

This is a key senior management and advisory role, responsible for managing the development of expert policy advice on electoral administration or political finance issues in Northern Ireland to Commissioners and the Executive Team and to support delivery of the Commission’s upcoming new five-year corporate plan. Deputising for the Head of Electoral Commission, Northern Ireland, as required, the successful candidate will ensure the successful delivery of the Commission’s strategic priorities and functions in Northern Ireland and provide line management of relevant colleagues, to deliver operational and team plans and projects within budget. They will also manage the Commission’s UK wide scheme of accreditation for electoral observers.

You will be required to demonstrate experience of policy development and experience of building and managing productive relationships with stakeholders at a senior level in a complex environment. While direct experience is not necessary, some knowledge of electoral administration processes, party finances, and the legislative framework within which the Commission operates is important. This is a full-time permanent position. The Commission also supports hybrid working. Given the nature of the role, occasional travel will be required to engage with colleagues in the Commission’s other offices including its headquarters in London.
