Main duties of the job

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.

  • Assisting healthcare professionals in providing high-quality patient care.
  • Conducting new patient health checks, measurements, and routine tests.
  • Supporting patients with various healthcare needs, such as wound care, blood pressures, ECGs working within your scope of practice.
  • Ear irrigation when trained under the supervision of the Practice Nurse.
  • Support the Practice Nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics.
  • When trained, administer B12 injections.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and assisting with administrative tasks as required.
  • Upholding infection control standards and ensuring a clean and safe environment for patients.
  • Carry out BMI checks as directed.
  • Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transport.
  • Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session.
  • Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance.
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisation's IPC policy.
  • Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate.

Qualifications

  • GCSE grade A-C in English and Maths or equivalent.
  • Experience of working with the general public.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting.
  • Ability to record on clinical notes.
  • Excellent communication skills and including excellent IT skills.
  • Effective time management.
  • Ability to work as a team and autonomously.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow clinical policy.
  • Polite and confident with a flexible approach.
  • A self-motivated individual who has excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Operates with high integrity and loyalty.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Punctual and committed member of the team.
  • Ability to work under pressure.

You will be expected to undertake a DBS check.

  • Ideally you will have completed the HCA Care Certificate.
  • Experience of working in Primary Care.
  • Have undertaken wound care and suture removal training.
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Experience in EMIS.
  • Flexibility where required to work outside of core hours.
