Colchester | Fixed Share Partner from Day One | Leadership Role Ready to Lead a Team Rather Than Just Manage a Caseload? Exceptional leadership opportunities in Commercial Property don't come along often. This is one of them. A highly respected regional law firm is looking for an experienced senior lawyer to take the reins of its successful Commercial Property & Agricultural Property department. The work is already there. The clients are established. The team is in place. What they're looking for now is a leader.

Whether you're already a Partner, Legal Director or an ambitious Senior Associate who is already performing at Partner level, this is an opportunity to step into a genuine leadership position with clear progression towards Equity Partnership.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Lead from Day One – Take responsibility for an established, respected department with an excellent reputation across the region.
  • People Leadership is the Priority – This role is about leading, mentoring and developing a successful team as much as practising law.
  • Commercial Property with a Strong Rural Client Base – The department advises commercial businesses, developers, landowners and farming clients. Agricultural property experience is welcomed but is not essential.
  • Clear Route to Equity – Join as a Fixed Share Partner with a realistic pathway to Equity Partnership for the right individual.
  • No Following Required – You'll inherit an established client base and a steady flow of quality work.

The Role

As Head of Department, you'll oversee an experienced Commercial Property team while maintaining your own high-quality caseload. The work spans a broad range of commercial property matters, including:

  • Commercial acquisitions and disposals
  • Development land
  • Property finance
  • Landlord and tenant matters
  • Investment property
  • Rural and agricultural property transactions
  • Strategic land and estate work
  • Succession planning for landowners and farming businesses

Whilst the department has a strong agricultural client base, the firm is happy to consider experienced Commercial Property lawyers who have managed teams and are keen to broaden their expertise into this area.

Who We're Looking For

This opportunity will suit someone who enjoys developing people just as much as advising clients. You may be:

  • An existing Partner or Legal Director seeking a fresh challenge
  • A Senior Associate who is already undertaking many of the responsibilities of a Partner but without the title
  • A Team Leader looking for genuine autonomy and influence

Most importantly, you'll bring:

  • Significant experience in Commercial Property
  • A proven track record of leading, mentoring and developing lawyers
  • Experience managing team performance, workflow and client relationships
  • Strong commercial awareness and strategic thinking
  • A collaborative leadership style and genuine passion for developing others

Agricultural Property experience would certainly be welcomed, but it is not a prerequisite. The firm is happy to support an experienced Commercial Property lawyer in developing that aspect of the practice.

The Firm

This long-established regional practice has ambitious growth plans and an outstanding reputation for looking after both its clients and its people. The culture is genuinely collaborative, with Partners who work together to grow the business and develop future leaders rather than operate in silos. You'll be joining a firm where your ideas will be welcomed, your leadership valued, and your contribution recognised.

What's on Offer?

  • Fixed Share Partnership from day one
  • Clear pathway to Equity Partnership
  • Competitive Partner remuneration
  • 30 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Additional Christmas closure
  • Employer pension contribution
  • Health and wellbeing initiatives
  • Ongoing leadership development
  • A friendly, supportive and highly collaborative partnership
