Reporting to the Consents Manager, the successful candidate will play a key role in helping projects progress smoothly across SEPD in the South of England by combining technical know-how with strong communication skills. The Consents Advisor will support the coordination of consents, ensure full regulatory compliance, and be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders including local authorities, environmental bodies, and community representatives.

Here are some of the activities you would get involved with:

  • Consents Management: Assist in managing the consents and approvals process for infrastructure projects, ensuring that all necessary permissions, permits, and licences are obtained within project deadlines.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Support the Consents Manager by staying up to date with planning regulations, environmental legislation, and other legal frameworks to ensure compliance throughout the project’s lifecycle.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders, including local authorities, community groups, landowners, and environmental agencies. Help facilitate clear communication to ensure stakeholders are informed and engaged with project developments.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of all consent applications, stakeholder interactions, and engagement activities. Prepare reports for both internal and external stakeholders, ensuring that all documentation is compliant with regulatory and company standards.
  • Risk Assessment: Assist in identifying potential risks and challenges associated with obtaining consents and engaging stakeholders. Work with the project team to develop strategies that mitigate these risks and ensure smooth project progression.
  • Project Coordination: Liaise with project managers and engineers to ensure that consents and stakeholder feedback are incorporated into project timelines, helping to streamline approvals and maintain good relations with external parties.
  • Process Improvement: Contribute to improving processes for managing consents and engagement, streamlining workflows, and adopting best practices to ensure efficient project delivery.
  • Support Team Leadership: Provide administrative and strategic support to the Consents Manager and assist in leading engagement activities with the wider team, including geospatial analysts and other officers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.

We would love to hear from you, if you can demonstrate:

  • Proven experience (ideally 3-5 years) in consents management, environmental permitting, or regulatory compliance within the construction or infrastructure sector.
  • Strong understanding of either planning regulations, environmental legislation or land rights and regulatory frameworks relevant to construction projects.
  • Project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage competing deadlines, and coordinate activities across multiple projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and experience with consents management software or databases.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences and build positive relationships.
  • A proactive problem-solver who can anticipate issues and develop solutions that minimise project delays and enhance stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to work flexibly in a hybrid environment, with a willingness to travel.

The role will require occasional travel between project sites and offices, as well as the flexibility to attend stakeholder meetings and public consultations in various locations.
