We are recruiting for a Large Loss Handler on behalf of a leading Motor Insurer based in Central London. The successful candidate will take ownership of large & complex motor claims developing into or actively managing (depending on experience) catastrophic injury claims, ensuring accurate reserving, robust technical strategy, effective litigation management and fair customer outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigating and managing high-value, complex and contentious motor claims, ensuring appropriate reserving and cost-effective settlements.
- Identifying, analysing and interpreting policy coverage to ensure liability decisions align with contractual commitments.
- Proactively review and maintain accurate claims reserves, reflecting developments in liability, quantum and evidence.
- Developing and applying claims strategies to drive efficient resolution, reduce lifecycle duration and optimise outcomes.
- Identifying and pursuing subrogation, contribution and recovery opportunities where appropriate.
- Instructing and managing solicitors, counsel and experts, including attendance at conferences, mediations and court hearings as required.
- Acting as a technical referral point, providing mentoring, coaching and guidance to support capability development and succession planning.
- Delivering technical training to claims colleagues and relevant internal or external partners.
- Contributing to process and technical improvement initiatives, using audit insights and referral trends to enhance operational effectiveness.
Key Requirements
- Significant experience handling large loss motor PI claims, including complex liability and quantum ideally at values in excess of £500,000.
- Preferably experience managing claims up to a value or more than £1m.
- Strong understanding of pre- and post-litigation procedures.
- Detailed knowledge of special and general damages, including high-value and catastrophic injury awards.
- Working knowledge of CRU/NHS recovery processes.
- Experience assessing past and future losses, including application of Ogden Tables.
- Sound understanding of regulatory, compliance and statutory requirements.
- Proven experience managing catastrophic injury claims, including amputation, spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.
- Background in claims management, loss adjusting or legal services within motor PI.
