About Civmec
Civmec is an integrated, multi-disciplinary heavy engineering and construction provider serving the metals and minerals, oil and gas, infrastructure, and marine and defence markets. From our purpose-built facility in Henderson, just south of Perth, we deliver end-to-end solutions on some of the largest industrial and defence projects in Australia.
Our work is self-performed and delivered in-house rather than subcontracted out. The projects you would be working on are shipbuilding, bridges, processing plants and defence infrastructure β built by our own people, in our own facility.
The opportunity
We have secured a portfolio of new projects and are building out our project commercial teams. Rather than recruiting for a single vacancy, we are hiring across the full range of experience β from quantity surveyors with a few years of post-contract administration behind them, through to commercial managers ready to lead a project commercial function.
Whatever the level, the work sits in the same place: the post-contract commercial administration of major projects. If you enjoy the detail of subcontract administration, the discipline of getting claims and notices right, and the negotiation involved in agreeing variations, these roles will suit you.
We would rather hear from a strong quantity surveyor than lose them because the advertised title didn't match. If you are unsure which level fits, apply anyway and tell us what you are looking for.
The three levels we're hiring:
Quantity Surveyor β 3+ years Supporting the project commercial team, with a strong focus on administering existing subcontracts. You will be preparing and assessing progress claims, processing variations, drafting contractual correspondence, and keeping commercial records audit-ready.
Senior Quantity Surveyor β 6+ years Running the commercial administration of your own subcontract packages end to end, from procurement and engagement through to final account. You will handle extension of time and delay claims, provide commercial advice on entitlement and risk, and support less experienced members of the team.
Commercial Manager β 10+ years Leading the commercial function on a major project. Accountable for head contract compliance, the resolution and closeout of variations and remeasurement claims, procurement strategy and risk, cost and cashflow reporting, and the leadership and mentoring of the project commercial team. Requires prior experience in a lead commercial role on projects exceeding AUD 200M (approximately GBP 105M).
What the work involves Common to every level:
- Subcontract administration β administering existing subcontracts across their lifecycle, from engagement through to final account
- Payment and progress claims β preparing, assessing and certifying claims, and managing the associated cashflow and remeasurement processes
- Variations and change management β identifying, pricing, negotiating and closing out variations and contract adjustments
- Contractual correspondence β drafting notices, determinations and responses to claims under both head contract and subcontracts
- Delay and extension of time claims β preparing or assessing claims and advising on entitlement
- Commercial records β maintaining registers and documentation to an audit-ready standard
- Working with the supply chain β clear, direct communication with subcontractors, day in and day out
- Growing with seniority: procurement strategy and risk allocation at contract formation, cost forecasting and supplier liability reporting, head contract compliance, mentoring, and ultimately leadership of the commercial team.
About you
Essential at every level:
- A minimum of 3 years in contract administration, with genuine subcontract administration experience rather than cost consultancy alone
- Confident with progress claims, variations and contractual correspondence
- Strong, clear written and verbal communication β these roles generate a lot of contractual correspondence and it needs to be right
- Competent with Excel, Word and Outlook
- Valued but not essential:
- A tertiary qualification in quantity surveying, construction management, engineering, commercial or law. We will consider strong candidates qualified by experience
- MRICS or equivalent chartership, or working towards it
- Experience of medium to large-scale heavy engineering or construction β energy, resources, infrastructure, marine or defence
- Familiarity with NEC, FIDIC, JCT or comparable standard forms
- Defence project experience is highly regarded but not required. Applications from ex-service personnel are welcomed
- Experience on Western Australian FIFO or DIDO projects is desirable but not expected of international applicants
We recognise UK and international experience on its own merits and do not require prior Australian experience.
