Our role in protecting the UKs national security is unique, and it is our highly trained National Firearms Instructors that are responsible for delivering key firearms training to our officers.

This crucial role as a National Firearms Instructor (NFI) will include supporting all aspects of firearms training delivery; coaching tactical and range training; classroom-based training; designing training content; lesson preparation; and conducting Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) assessments.

You will support, develop, and facilitate the coaching of firearms tactics and weapon handling to a broad range of officers, from those on Initial Firearms Courses to experienced Firearms Officers completing refresher and specialist courses. The role is full-time on a 10-hour daytime shift pattern, which may include some weekends.

We have multiple vacancies for National Firearms Instructors and offer full training. Eligibility criteria include:

  • Current and competent National Firearms Instructors from other Police Forces
  • Current or former Police Officers who have been operational AFO/ARV or AFO/CT (preferably within the last 18 months)
  • Current or former National Firearms Instructors from other backgrounds (e.g., Military)
  • Current or former Military Personnel (preferably within the last 18 months) with experience in delivering training (e.g., skill at arms/CBRN)

Desirable qualifications include previous instructing experience in classrooms, conducting exercises and ranges (e.g., skill at arms Instructor, Platoon Weapons, RMQ, SA qualifications), and recognized teaching qualifications.

Training will depend on your qualifications and experience, which will be reviewed and discussed if you pass screening. All training includes hotel accommodation, food, transport, and fuel costs if required, and you will be paid from day one.

Police Constable NFIs must maintain their instructor competence through refresher training but are not operationally deployable officers.
