The Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) is an armed police service that’s dedicated to the nuclear industry. As Operational Communications Technician, you’ll play a key role in keeping our officers in constant contact with each other.

Our Operational Communications Team ensures that our front-line officers are able to communicate with each other day-to-day, and with other emergency services in the event of an incident. It will be your responsibility to support the team in providing a technical delivery function and resilience to support core activities. The nature of this role demands meticulous attention to detail and being well-equipped to handle work in a secure environment.

You\’ll deliver an effective business as usual service capability, as well as getting involved in a variety of projects, including the transition from Airwave to the new Emergency Services Network (ESN). You will plan, implement, and deliver specific work streams and projects, and be responsible for resolving faults and issues relating to devices fitted within vehicles or fixed positions and site-specific and specialist kit and equipment.

The role holder will provide planning, support and delivery activities relating to the Operational Communications Team scope of work, adopting and developing best practices such as ITIL, Lean Six Sigma and Prince 2 and use these to bring OC workstreams and projects to completion.

To join us, you’ll need experience within Radio Engineering (or a related technical field), it would be ideal if this were in an emergency service or similar organisation. You’ll know how to install, integrate, and maintain technical radio or communication systems, drawing on a relevant degree, an equivalent vocational qualification or relevant work experience.

In addition, you will demonstrate the ability to capture and document user and technical requirements, as well as have effective communication and team-working skills. A willingness to travel to other sites as required and a full UK driving licence are also crucial, as some of our sites are in remote locations.

Please note that this role will initially be based at our HQ Culham until our relocation to Harwell in Autumn 2026 and the role thereafter will be based at Harwell.

Above all, you’ll be making sure that our technology meets strict security requirements and complies with licence terms, both now and in the future.

  • Some of the responsibilities of this role include:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of both the technical and contextual issues and effectively articulate the issue/requirements/outcomes etc.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the Ops Comms team’s functional areas to provide resilience as necessary, to include but not limited to; break/fix process, helpdesk monitoring, auditing and reprogramming and other specialist activities
  • Provide relevant and timely responses to issues and contribute effective resolutions developed by the team, which could include site visits to Operational Units
  • Maintain and develop technical knowledge of Airwave and Operational Communications issues, best practice, and standards
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of ESN – the Emergency Services Network which will replace Airwave within the next 5 years
  • Provide tactical and operational advice and guidance as appropriate, translating technical concepts to suit a non-technical audience.
  • Engage with stakeholders and End Users to identify and develop solutions to support the delivery of an improve Ops Comms function to meet the specific needs of the Constabulary policing functions in a secure environment
  • Contribute to the development of a service excellence culture to add value to the CNC in line with the Operational Communications Strategy, through effective use of best practice tools such as; planning, process mapping, impact assessments and production of relevant documentation
  • This role will require travel to our sites throughout the UK, particularly to the South Division OPU’s.

    To be successful in the role you will need to display the following essential experience and skills:

  • Hold a vocational qualification or equivalent work experience in Radio Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Demonstrable experience of installing, integrating, and maintain of technical radio or communications systems in a service role
  • Demonstrable experience of effective planning, production of documentation, impact assessments, and change control
  • Experience of capturing and effectively communicating issues, risks, impacts, requirements, and outcomes
  • Experience of operating in teams with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Understand the project lifecycle and the use of methodologies such as; Prince2, ITIL and Lean Six Sigma and the ability to effectively apply them
  • Able to organise own workload, set priorities and deadlines, with a proactive attitude and able to flex with competing priorities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Effective liaison and interpersonal skills at all levels
