Overview
Design and Certification Specialist – Electrical and Avionics is a role within the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The CAA is the UK’s aviation regulator, supporting safety standards and evolving aviation environments. This role involves technical involvement with certification projects, continued airworthiness activities, and liaison with industry and other aviation authorities.
Salary: Up to £82,000k per annum dependant on experience and completion of training
Contract Type: Permanent, Full-time
Location: Gatwick / Hybrid Working

The Role
The UK Civil Aviation Authority is expanding its team of Design and Certification Specialists to support the state of design responsibility for traditional fixed/rotary wing and innovative air vehicles. The Electrical and Avionics team seeks aerospace engineers with relevant development or certification experience to develop into a Design and Certification Specialist. Applications from individuals with experience in one or more related areas of electrical and avionics across any fixed or rotary wing aircraft will be considered.

Responsibilities
Your main role will be the technical involvement with certification projects and related continued airworthiness activities. It will also involve liaison with the UK industry for certification and oversight activities with other authorities (e.g., EASA, FAA, ANAC) through existing and developing working arrangements. The post may require on-site visits to Gatwick or other design organisations within the UK.

- Core design background or CVE experience within electrical, avionics, or software disciplines
- Ability to monitor, guide and manage technical decisions on major safety issues
- Experience across different cultural business environments and varying levels of seniority
- Ability to make sound judgments from experience
- Resilience to work at pace with varied matters
- Ability to understand specialist issues and balance technical views with wider business and political considerations
- Confidence to challenge information and propositions at a deep technical level
- Confidence to escalate issues as they arise
- Strong communication skills with stakeholders at all levels
- Attention to detail and capable in report writing
- Experience with working with other national aviation authorities (e.g., EASA, FAA, ANAC, TCCA, NAAs)
- Experience across aviation product design, manufacture, and airline operations
