As a Senior Civil and Highways Engineer based in London, UK, you will take a leading role in the design and delivery of a wide range of building, highways and public realm projects across the UK – spanning residential, educational and commercial sectors. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams across Civic, work with high‑profile public and private clients, and support the shaping of healthier, climate‑resilient and people‑centred urban environments.
Key Elements of the Job
- Technical
- Lead and undertake engineering design and analysis of highways, streets, drainage and overall civil infrastructure.
- Develop concept, preliminary and detailed designs aligned with local, regional and national guidance.
- Identify problems and opportunities, assess and resolve issues using qualitative and quantitative measures, and supervise others.
- Prepare, present and self‑check technical reports, drawings and design packages, and supervise others.
- Undertake and oversee technical checking and self‑checking of work.
- Use and supervise industry‑standard software (CAD, GIS, junction modelling, drainage and levels design tools).
- Lead internal technical reviews and ensure design compliance with CDM 2015 duties and Civic IMS/QMS.
- Managerial
- Take responsibility and ownership of projects: define outputs, deadlines, consultation requirements, liaise with the team, manage client expectations, and feed matters back to management.
- Manage and mentor engineers, graduates and technicians, supporting skills development and high‑quality outputs.
- Manage resource plans and programming alongside team leaders.
- Attend meetings as the lead Civic representative and maintain regular client communication.
- Contribute to business development, including writing fee proposals, supporting bids and attending networking opportunities.
- Maintain project financial and commercial awareness, including monitoring budgets, scope and programme.
- Behaviour and Professional Commitment
- Demonstrate professional rigour by being Chartered or Incorporated, or working actively toward Chartered status with ICE, CIHT or CIWEM.
- Participate and present in CPD, Civic Academy sessions, and maintain a clear Development Action Plan.
- Maintain a record of your CPD and Development Action Plan.
- Demonstrate behaviour consistent with Civic’s Values and contribute to the organisation’s progress.
- Act as a role model for inclusive, sustainable and people‑centred design approaches.
- Key Skills / Competencies
- In‑depth understanding of industry processes, including planning applications, procurement and technical approvals.
- Proficiency in industry software such as Microdrainage, Causeway Flow, Civil 3D, AutoCAD (KeyLines, KeySigns, Vehicle Tracking).
- Excellent communication skills: verbal, written and graphical.
- Exceptional report‑writing skills.
- Strong numerical, analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
- High proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word).
- Excellent time management, commercial awareness and teamwork skills.
- Developed industry network and business development skills.
Is This You?
- A degree in Civil Engineering or an analytical subject with sufficient industry experience.
- A post‑graduate qualification in engineering, transportation, planning or related subject (beneficial).
- Either Chartered or Incorporated status, or within six months of chartership submission.
- Extensive design office experience within a commercial environment.
- Good range of experience in civil and highways engineering – drainage design, flood risk assessments, active travel, network design, S278, data collection, modelling, business case development or similar.
